Do people drive in silence with the radio off?

Never before have I hear about road noise or heard about it being such an issue.

No, it not legal to wear headphones while driving in any state.
Here's an article on that from 2018. Things may be different now, but according to this there are only about 9 states that ban headphones completely, 8 that have some sort of partial ban, and the rest have no laws about headphones and driving.

Do people drive in silence with the radio off?
Yes. Sometimes they even drive and talk with the radio off.

But... personally... I like a quiet car so that I can sleep while I'm driving.

I come to the Maverick from a Tesla Model 3. Will definitely be comparing cabin noise.
So you are comparing a $50k EV sedan to a a $20k truck. I predict you will find that the maverick has a noisier cabin.

I have a Maverick XL. I put BFG Trail Terrain Tires on it. The road noise is fine in my opinion. I rented a Toyota Corolla LX last week for work. It was much louder. For a 25k AWD pick-up truck I think it is actually kind of quiet!
I would like to see cabin Db numbers before and after putting sound dampening sheets in the doors and under the hood.

Not really expecting the moon and starts but nobody with any credibility has said it's unacceptably loud.

Is it legal to wear headphones while driving in Texas? I used to live in CA and it was illegal. Justification being you could not hear sirens from emergency vehicles or other environmental noises tht might avoid an accident. Not sure about this in CO or other states
Its not illegal. And with noise cancellation, which the software really focuses more on wind type of "white noise", you can hear people and sirens better than someone that just has their radio on loud. Also legal for deaf people to drive in Texas, so it would be quite a double standard if they allow some people that hear nothing to drive while others can't. As a motorcyclist, I also wore earplugs under my helmet regularly.

It would be very rare for me to not have music or an audio book playing.

For me it is not a huge deal of noise, but it is there. I first began to pay attention after I got the third person complaining about background noise while on a call. Never had that on the F150 or the Toyotas, one of the callers commented that it suddenly improved to perfect clarity and this happened as I crossed from asphalt to concrete - in my truck the difference is pretty stark, so I am not chasing wind noise. Subsequent test calls proved this up to my satisfaction, concrete good, asphalt bad.

I have been all over this truck, and I really like the build quality, but it does need some sound damping, no argument - and better tires

To be perfectly honest one of the reasons for getting rid of the Wrangler was the cabin noise. With larger tires and a soft top it was pretty bad. Passing a semi on the highway was almost painful. Nice vehicle but the noise wasn't for me.

Road noise on calls makes perfect sense. I currently don’t have a car that has Bluetooth audio options, hahahaha.

This is all new to me.

Here's my real world data... 25 mile drive, max of 60MPH, typical crappy SC roads and the loudest it got was when some idiot required the use of my horn, to remind him that he's an idiot...

I used the decibel X app on my iphone 12 Pro Max. Phone was positioned on the passenger seat, with the mic facing the dash.

I will be so put upon if the road noise does not compare with our Aston Martin or Bentley. However will we cope?

Having ordered the FX4 I was already expecting more road noise with the Pirelli's. Haven't noticed anything all that bad in the videos posted, though the engine is not an impressive noise. More like a hamster being tortured.

IMO the frequency of the noise also can matter more than the decibels.

For example, I don't mind low humming noise that can show up just as high on a db scale compare to high frequency stuff (especially squeaks). Low frequency noise doesn't really impede a conversation, and can even be soothing. One example I can think of is comparing my friends Miata that has a lot of high frequency noise (wind/tires) to our late Charger Scat Pack that has a lot of low frequency noise (mostly exhaust drone). Charger was much more relaxing on long rides and easier to chat without feeling like you're shouting, even though both were noisy in different ways.

Most of the reviews so far don't seem to pay much attention to cabin noise, but Edmunds warned not to get expectations too high yet not Jeep Gladiator levels either: " There is noticeable outside noise once you're fully up to speed, but not an egregious amount by any means."

Sadly, while winding road youtuber has done the Santa Cruz they haven't done the Maverick yet, nor has Alex on Autos that can give a subjective score provided a full review to compare it in class. This POV one seems decent though, and you can use headphones to see what type of noise it is:

My lariat with the goofy Michelin car tires is pretty loud as far as road noise on rough roads. Especially chip and seal. On smooth road it’s extremely quiet, wind noise is well controlled. They should of put Michelin ltx defenders on it.

Never been in a vehicle with this bad of an engine tone though. Buzzy sounding, but quiet at speed so just take getting used to.
