My 22 ecoboost maverick. 2.3 swap in January, after #3 went low on compression. Check thay thing out in the pics! Guess it got a lil 🔥! I spent bonus money on a snow stage 2 meth injection setup, some stance SR10 rims and a matte metallic green wrap. I did the wrap myself, along with all the rest. Everyone want a dyno sheet, but I dont have one. I need a good on dyno tune to really open the 2.3 and take advantage of the methanol cooling, i need to crank up the timing. Ihave a livernoris tune currently, and they replied that they could, but that's in Michigan......

that piston ring land is pretty jacked, ouch. what did the other pistons look like?

The ring gap is probably too tight from the factory and the rings expanded and took a chunk of piston with them.

Just looked at your other thread too... wow! Great work! The 2.0 Mav is already quite peppy, so I'm sure this 2.3 feels awesome. Very interested to see the numbers once you can get some more tuning done!

at the mileage he listed (100k+) something is going to eventually fail especially on a tuned engine used at high rpm. apparently it's the ring land. I see some damage to the top of the piston but it doesn't look melted so it's probably the pieces of the piston and ring that got smashed into the valves and piston top.

I'm curious to see all the valves also, if he took pics.

Really like the color and wheels. I'm going to need to replace the factory tires probably by the end of this year... I usually do a wheel swap when I replace the factory tires but have been having a hard time finding some I really liked. Time will tell I guess... but your combo is pretty nice

It’s toasted for sure. It looks like a big section of piston chunked off above and below the ring which usually means the rings got heated up and expanded pushing against each other with no where to go. That ends up putting tremendous pressure on the piston and will break a chunk off.

It usually just chunks the top of the piston off because the lower half of the piston has a bunch more metal to push away from the rings. In this case it looks like the lower part of the piston got pushed away from the rings expanding as well since there’s not a lot of piston material above the lower ring and below the upper ring. Above the oil control ring as well. Pretty wicked.

ring land failure is a common issue on turbocharged engines that are modified, especially those that use cast pistons and/or short skirts, which are also common on modern engines because of the mpg benefits. this piston has a decent skirt, but I bet it's cast given the maverick's low cost and low factory horsepower.

when fuel and timing is good, but the load is high, eventually this is going to happen. there was nothing for the OP to have done differently, unlike if we saw a melted piston, rod bearing failure, etc.

For sure. It’s very common on cars not build for forced induction and then someone throws a supercharger on it. The ring gap is set for NA for mileage and emissions and when it gets too hot pop goes the piston. Hemi 392’s are known for it.

Looks like an oil issue to me. Things do happen but the tune looked good based on that piston. But a lots of bad things can happen in the rings when oil fails. But parts fail and it may have just been a weak link in one flawed piston

Man I can say it would be worth the trip to lms. They did my last two with meth injections and both went crazy high mileage before they were replaced
