Edit: I put this in the wrong subforum sorry! Should be in "Mechanical Maintenance: Break-In / Oils & Fluids / Consumables / Servicing"

So I have a Blackstone oil kit and a manual oil siphon pump. My plan was to drive over 30 min to get things up to temp and siphon 200-300 milliliters of oil from the oil cap. I'm currently at 400 mi with varying drive situations City, highway, country roads with four-way stops. feel like I've gotten everything I need to do beyond romping the gas pedal which I don't plan on doing till the oil analysis comes back. then at A thousand miles I'm going to change the oil. I've heard that depending on your driving this eco-Boost can be broken in in under 500 MI.

Does it matter if you siphon the oil from the top vs taking a sample from the drain plug? Id imagine at full operating temp and some driving the contaminates should be well enough circulated to take from either end.

I would think it would be fine either way as long as you get enough oil for the sample kit.you going to enjoy taking the screws out of the cover under the engine!

Do you mean from the dipstick tube ?
I don't think the " oil cap " will help you ...
So you can't extract from the filler tube and it needs to be from the dipstick opening?

edit:
if there was a joke about extracting oil from a cap, It flew over my head until just now lol

How much does it cost to get the oil analyzed? What are the options dealing with Ford if the results are less than favorable?

Why not take the sample at 1K when you change the oil? A 400 mile sample is not going to tell you much. An analysis when you get more miles (10K+) will be more meaningful.

No, you cannot siphon from the filler cap, there is no direct path to the oil pan.

Im trying to determine if 500 or 1000 is the proper break in period for my driving habits. wear is wear. so if you wear it sooner and wait too long for a fluid change you might as be wearing a dunce cap.. In the minute differences between reading the wear and tear in microns. tdlr I drive very varied and Im weary of my oil.

lol Thanks for the reminder the filler cap is top end and the dip stick tube reaches the bottom end. never had a vehicle I liked enough to think deep thoughts about

my wife cut me off drinks.

There is going to be virtually no difference for an oil analysis on a brand new engine with 500 miles, or 1000 miles.

But hey, your truck, your money, knock yourself out.... 🤠

what about 1000 vs 1500, were would the line be drawn?

As I said earlier, at 10K+, you will start to get a usable analysis.
If the goal is to determine the break in period for this engine and you say a usable analysis is 10K,+ Is a break in oil change not required?

Required? No. But many choose to do the first oil change anywhere from 1K to 5K, and that's fine. But determining when to do regular oil changes via analysis will start to clarify at 10K+, when initial engine wear-in is essentially complete.

im not talking about determining regular oil change intervals after break in with analysis. Im specifically talking about break in intervals with analysis. It sounds like were talking about two different things.

Change the oil at the end if you want. Save your Blackstone for another time when it might be useful to confirm/rebut the oil life monitor your truck already has.

I've already understood that in the e-manuel. this isnt about the recommended break in period. we all drive our vehicle different. the main objectives is oil analysis between the break in period mileage around 500-1000 miles
