lol.... what exactly are you hoping to learn from an analysis during break-in? That your engine is wearing in normally? Are you just curious? Are you going to do something different, based on the results? I fail to see the point, but again, your truck, your money...

I'm going to excuse myself now.... 🙃

Yes, how the wear in fairs for my engine and curiosity. This will then determine when my next oil change will be. 500 mile test, if the levels are about normal compared to other oil analysis results of the same engine I'll replace the oil at 1000 and take another sample. Based on those results I might do the next one at 3,000 and take another sample and determine were I should be at for my regular intervals.

Edit: I put this in the wrong subforum sorry! Should be in "Mechanical Maintenance: Break-In / Oils & Fluids / Consumables / Servicing"

So I have a Blackstone oil kit and a manual oil siphon pump. My plan was to drive over 30 min to get things up to temp and siphon 200-300 milliliters of oil from the oil cap. I'm currently at 400 mi with varying drive situations City, highway, country roads with four-way stops. feel like I've gotten everything I need to do beyond romping the gas pedal which I don't plan on doing till the oil analysis comes back. then at A thousand miles I'm going to change the oil. I've heard that depending on your driving this eco-Boost can be broken in in under 500 MI.

Does it matter if you siphon the oil from the top vs taking a sample from the drain plug? Id imagine at full operating temp and some driving the contaminates should be well enough circulated to take from either end.

Many other, more knowledgeable people here may advise as to how and when to do oil analysis...search for oil analysis on this site, some very thorough owners who sample regularly and explain their findings/logic for tests.

I will just say this as to how, as asked in your initial thread post.

When we took aircraft engine and gearbox assy oil samples, it was

1. after a flight or lengthy ground run where everything is hot and well stirred up,

2. OIL SAMPLE HAD TO BE TAKEN WITHIN 5 MINUTES of shut down, so that any and all potential contaminants were still suspended on the oil,

3. Most samples were taken from the oil fill cap hole/if apprpriate, once the fill cap was removed of course. ;-)

4. Wear gloves, that oil is darn hot, therefore your oil sample bottle could be burning hot once oil is syphoned out and into it.

5. Extreme cleanliness I mandatory, for test results to be accurate, and repeatable.

I hope thos is of assistance to you,

Andy

Per the Blackstone web site - When it’s time to take your oil sample, you can do it one of two ways: either take the sample when you change the oil, or draw it out through the dipstick with a pump

If during an oil change, they suggest taking the sample from the middle of the drain.

Thanks for posting. I was unaware.
Blackstone also recommends NOT starting the engine before sample is taken.

I have a pump Im just waiting on a hose extension because it doesnt reach all the way down the dipstick hole.

Ill make sure I have gloves on! Safety first

Ive seen a couple of oil analysis reports on this forum. Ill dig in deeper as you suggest there are already Im sure answers to some of my questions on breakin and engine wear.

I don't think you need to ask how I confirmed that hot oil is bad for you...super hot is, in fact, super hot!

If you are following Blackstone Labs instructions. (☝post #21 first line)
You should NOT be dealing with hot oil at all??

so, to be clear, starting a siphon and planning to spit out the first of the oil is a Bad Idea (tm)?

🤔

That is one way to do it!
;-)

Another is to lose control of the oil bottles' little line you use to draw the oil out of the Sea King #1 engine I was sampling.

Probably not the same anymore as things have progressed since then.

Good idea to use safety glasses as well, if using small flexible draw lines (to draw hot oil) as they can flick around a bit, for example....only If you want to, of course and if needed.

Good times,

Andy

Waste of money engines these days go 200-300,000 miles and bet you can't find one engine worn out from worn out oil.

A break-in oil analysis cannot be used to figure out how frequently to change oil.
