The issue I have with this Fed tax is that many of the states are already slapping EV and Hybrid owners with sizeable taxes. I know it is asking a lot for someone in govt at the Fed and state level to find someone with "math skills" to figure out what the tax should be for the person driving the average number of miles and apply some common sense. That still is unfair to those that don't drive that many miles a year, but compared to what appear to be happening right now it will seem like a bargain. Heaviest use roads that require the largest costs may have to go to a toll structure to cover it.

The only thing The government cannot tax is your punishment, 90%of the time its out of work & 10% of the time its in the hole, & it only has 2 dependents & they're both nuts.

The history of a federal gas tax as I know it began in the Eishenhower era. His administration proposed it during the Cold War to fund a national highway system for defense purposes. At the time, all engines were ICE, gas and Diesel, a tax on fuel made sense and was pay as you go.

A fuel tax deduction was incorporated on income tax forms for farmers and others who used fuels but did not use the vehicle or implement on the highways. I assume it also applied to mining vehicles too.

Not so any longer. We have a mix of fewer ICE and more hybrid and EV. As the mix changes to hybrids and EV's, the national highways still need to be maintained. Which leads politicians of both parties to divine ways to do this.

There is a federal tax on aviation gas of 19.4 cents per gallon to fund aviation related infrastructure.

As politics are a good way to ruin a friendship, how about world comparisons?

I will be speaking as to my experiences and general understandings of this topic.

Fuel taxes...

Ford Maverick Proposed federal yearly fee for Hybrids Screenshot_20250523_095843_Chrom

America has the lowest fuel taxes in general in the world as compared to comparable economies.

Canada has the 2nd lowest fuel taxes, same comparison.

I can speak for our experience while living in The Netherlands. (Wonderful country, great place to live, especially if you like cycling!)

You can check out their tax rate for vehicles, most phones can translate already and I can still work my way through it the hard way.

Long story short.

We had a Jeep Liberty, we were there as Diplomatic Representatives (my wife worked at the Canadian Embassy 2013-2016).

We were exempt from the road tax. If we were locals, the road tax totaled about 240€/375CAD/270USD..
Every 3 months.

Heavier vehicle = more road tax,
Tow Hitch=more tax on your GCWR, etc. It goes on.

No messing about, no big brother reporting either.

There are tax breaks for ev's etc of course.

Then you paid for your gas (with tax included as well), currently sitting at 68% of the total gas price. (They sure have good roads)

Current gas price in The Hague is 1.95€/3.04CAD/2.21USD PER LITRE.

Canadian Imperial Gallon @ 4.5 litres...$13.68 CAD

American gallon is 3.78 litres...$8.35USD

(All are quick back of the napkin calculations)

Take another look at the chart above to let it soak in.

Seems kind of fair to me and well thought out, now that I have thought over it again.

I am just trying to keep a good perspective on this as I sometimes get too absorbed in our own situation and forget the big picture.

I find it amazing that the government want to charge a fee for ev’s and hybrid because they don’t use enough gas. But they also have me pay a gas guzzler tax on my Mustang. Seems a bit odd. Lol

interesting side note when they designed the federal highway system in many major cities they didn't build the overpasses tlal enough for inner city buses to use the highway. Only those that could afford autos could expand out - to what we call suburbs /metro areas -- this exacerbated the income gap ... hmmm

"It's fair" is a statement that has echoed through time haunting those who once paid a penny and now pay fees that increase, increase and increase again. That penny turns into a dollar, then $100.00 and then $1000.00. "It's fair" is a capitulation to an ever increasing tax that can be changed at will. To anything. Anytime.

one would think that reducing dependence on gasoline is a good goal, but when the sound bites include the words "beautiful clean coal" don't expect much out of the desire to use less fossil fuel. I understand we don't want to be political , but you have to pay for tax cuts for billionaires somehow.

I see several news outlets stating that the new proposed budget passed by the house includes " a provision for the Federal Highway Administration to impose a $250 annual fee on all-electric vehicles and a $100 yearly fee for hybrid vehicles. "
Any idea how that would work? When I register here in washington, I thought all of the fees I pay are determined by and go to the state. No federal portion that I know about. Are there any current federal fees we all are paying when we register a car? Our legislature just upped the fee for the "privilege" of owning a hybrid. I'm guessing a federal fee would be added to whatever the state wants to squeeze out of us?
Still have to go through the Senate they’re gonna tear the shit out of this bill and it’s gonna come out with a lot of changes so no sense wasting too much time debating things and talking about until it’s finally done deal.

Well - governing is HARD, especially if you are trying to be equitable. The federal EV/Hybrid ta is not a done deal yet, (but you know it is coming), but a bunch of states are doing it currently so the discussion is still relevant.

A big chunk of my property tax goes to funding education, and that is home value based regardless of whether you have children in school or not. I dont necessarily like it, but a flat tax can work if it is properly applied. They can fund the roads with either a flat tax, use tax, or even a hybrid ( pun intended ) tax and be fair(ish), but what they are doing right now is not equitable.
At least we all don't seem to be as divided on this as I thought we might have been.

It's already happening in the BB Bill:sick: Charging these owners extra is a cash grab by the states, take notice when you drive down the road, for every 1 hybrid & 1 EV, that's a total of 2, there are at least 25 full size 4 wheel drive pickups, many with lifts & larger tires that are more than making up for those 2.
Maybe in Texas, definitely not the mix here in northern IL.
