Has anyone experienced sudden acceleration without putting foot on gas? I have a hybrid Maverick and encouraged my elderly parents to get one. Their Lariat has less than 4,000 miles. Today driving it I felt a sudden tug as if it had shifted down to second gear. I looked down and it was in neutral. I thought maybe I had accidentally hit the dial. I turned it back to drive and it quickly accelerated without pressing on the gas. I had to ride the breaks to slow it down to turn onto a quiet street. I pulled over, put in park and turned it off. Restarted and as soon as I took my foot off the break it accelerated forward without putting my foot on the gas. I put it in park and turned it off, restarted. I repeated this three times and acceleration continued without putting my foot on the gas. I decided to try to get to dealership by riding break, but only got a block before something seemed to click and it stopped accelerating and drove normally. I got it home and have dealership coming to get it tomorrow to do diagnostics. What could cause this? Can I trust it can be fixed?

Given that modern vehicles have electric controls for the accelerator and brake, it's not inconceivable that there was a software glitch. Unless the computer threw a error code that sticks in the memory, check engine light for example, I think it's unlikely the dealer will find anything. Unless they get lucky and it happens again during a test drive, they'll likely come up empty handed with answers as to what happened.

Not saying this is the case here, but situations like this are often caused by the driver's floormat being accidentally placed on top of the gas pedal

PS: it's hard to overcome instincts, but you have to shift to neutral (when it's safe to do so) instead of riding the brakes if this happens!

Thanks for advice., I checked the mat after I turned it off and before restarting. I had been driving for about 10-15 minutes and was going about 55 when it started. it probably hasn’t been driven that speed much. My folks usually drive it only a few miles in town. The truck is basically new. I am just thankful it happened while I was driving, not my stepmom who is in her late 80s.

@Lynn W what speed would it accelerate to?
There was a rash of Mavericks that had similar sounding problems about a year ago sheets after a recall. This Mavs would accelerate to 30 or 35 mph if I remember correctly.

This ☝

IIRC, there is a software recall that addresses this. Have it towed to a Ford dealer and 'splain to them what happened.

There is NO WAY that mat is hitting the gas pedal in the Maverick. Have you seen how far off the floor it is?????

This happened with my Maverick Hybrid twice last week. Totally unexplainable at this point. Did you get any resolution?
