When I picked up my new 2025 Maverick, I noticed 134mi on the odometer. Now, I had heard that some models get “extra” testing at the factory, and asked the salesman if that’s what happened. He said it sometimes does. Ten minutes later, while doing the paperwork, the owner of the dealership came in and said that he’d driven the truck 110 miles to another town to “check out the prospects of buying one for the parts guy for the dealership to make deliveries, etc.”. I was nonplussed, but thanked him for being honest about where the extra miles came from (I waited 4 months for this truck, and I wasn’t refusing it for that reason, though it did cross my mind for a second).
Is this normal? The dealership is so small that I bought the first hybrid Maverick they’ve sold…

I would have demanded $2,000 off since it’s a used truck. If they didn’t comply I’d walk away. Just on principal alone.

You waited four months and they took it for a joy ride. That is so wrong.

My way of thinking is likely why I don’t have many friends, but I make no apologies. :’P

An answer to your question.
I would not consider this normal usage for a customer's special ordered vehicle. I feel the dealership owner took liberties that he really shouldn't have.

I think I would have kind of pushed for a free oil change. The cost of which would have been equal to the cost of a rental car. If the owner had to rent one.
You handled it like a gentleman. At least you didn't refuse the truck and walk out of the dealership. Kind of like,
"Cutting your nose off to spite your face.
You definitely had a choice.
You chose the one that worked best for you.

It's a lot but it's also probably less than a week of driving for most people. I'd be concerned about rock chips and road wear not done by you but it's not your truck until you sign and pay.

To me it was unethical (especially for the dealership owner) to take a customer ordered vehicle anywhere off the lot. Except of course to fuel or get SIBL, etc.
I would be upset, and may have walked away.
But unlikely any damage occurred, and it is under warranty.

When I bought my 24 XLT FX4 it had 19 miles showing on odo. There was another optioned just the same as the one I got but a different color. It was delivered to an adjacent state and had been a dealer "trade". It was showing 160 or so miles on it. Salesman had no idea who drove it or how it got to the dealership. I passed and paid for Azure Gray ($495) more for the one with 19 miles.
But I'm 81 and no doubt picky about some things.

Good luck and enjoy your new Maverick.

OP, my guess is it was innocent. Not very polite, but innocent. Dealerships are used to the old inventory days, where they'd do all kinds of errands on any vehicle on the lot. I betcha the owner never stopped to think "Oh, this isn't my inventory, but a customer ordered vehicle". Maybe I'm giving them too much credit, but my wager is they weren't being intentionally abusive. Just thoughtless.

Off topic, but OP I notice you are from Warner Robins, GA. As an old USAF C-130 test navigator with 3,500 flying hours in the C-130, Warner Robins holds a special place in my heart. That plane was born the same year as me, and we're both still going strong!

I volunteer at the Museum of Aviation Monday and Wednesday mornings, c’mon by sometime and we’ll talk about trashhaulers (targets) and fighters…😛

I ordered my Hybrid October of '21 .
It was delivered October of '22 . I was out of town at the time and picked it up several days later .
It had 40 something miles on the odometer , and noticable scratches in the bed , and on the inside of the tailgate . Somebody , somewhere hauled something in the bed .
Glad I inspected !
They gave me the spray in bed liner for free .
I was happy with that ....

We did a great course down in Sierra Vista, AZ. The fighters would attack us, and we would do our best to live. It was super cool because we were talking on the radio, and the fighter guys would be giving us tips. Basically, our goal was to make it too much work to be worth the fighter's effort. Those guys didn't like losing energy and altitude to shoot down a lowly target like a trash hauler at 300 AGL. So they taught us how to be an unappealing target.

I agree, what kind of idiocy is this dealer doing to special orders!

Yep they would be giving me a big discount. Not okay.

134mi! no. not normal at all. if ford does QC testing they leave a note on the windshield (though the dealer might rip that off). but 134 is complete bullshit. sorry it's probably too late but i would have demanded compensation or walked. fortunately for me i've known my dealer for years and they wouldn't pull a stunt like this with me, or anyone else.

be sure to rate them poorly, and even report them to ford.

Kinda sounds like a BS story from the owner tbh. They could have easily taken another used lot rig for their joy ride. Taking in on a 110 mile test drive is just wrong.
If I ever and I most likely never will special order a vehicle I will make them sign a statement that it not be driven at all once on the ground at the dealer.

I’d have to look, but I think my 2024 Eco Lariat that I bought off the Show room floor on 12/31/24 had 2.6 miles on it.
Or was it 3.6.
My point is my compadres mine was a NEW Vehicle !
No If’s and’s or but excuses.
The Two 2024 Tremors out front, one was a Lariat Tremor. Each had single digit miles.
I paid $36,700 for mine, I just couldn’t wrap my head around spending $42,000
No regrets.
