I’m good with my stock Turbo,
I can smoke a Subaru :’P
You should see people's faces when I absolutely destroy their dodge ram, silverado or whatever full size truck they bring in, trying to act like there's something

I'm good on the video, thanks. So you have watched some videos and read some specifications and formed opinions that you feel confident enough in to suggest as advice to others.

Learning from others obviously is important. We don't advance as fast, as easily, or as cheaply without gathering data from others. However, actually doing it and living through that experience and any associated challenges has a lot of value beyond whatever you can observe from forums, youtube, and so on.

There's nothing special about a Bronco Sport Badlands with 300 wheel horsepower. There are many Maverick owners right here with that. Those people are the ones who have not, yet, broken their 8F35 transmissions en masse.

Fair enough — we all value different sources of insight.

Just for context: my feedback here isn’t coming just from videos or reading spec sheets. I bring over 44 years of hands-on mechanical experience, particularly with Ford and BMW platforms, both on and off the record. My approach to performance and maintenance is rooted in that background — what breaks, what holds, and what gets overlooked until it's too late.

That said, I absolutely respect those pushing the limits of the Maverick drivetrain. But I’ve also seen what happens long-term when early warning signs get ignored. Everyone’s free to take their own route — I’m just here offering perspective for those who want their truck to go the distance.

Cheers

You're somewhat new, and welcome to the forums.

You lead with "SAVE YOUR MONEY" in all caps, so I qualify that as a strong opinion and it remains one based on no-hands on experience with the Maverick.

I get it. There are transmissions in the Aisin 8/9 speed family that are rated for more torque and those that are rated for less. And clearly, the 8F35 mated to an engine making 277 lb-ft stock is questionable on paper when you start making more than a hundred additional.

But they're not breaking en masse. A person who tunes their Maverick and nothing else, or even a person who upgrades their turbo, is hardly pulling a pin on a live grenade.

There are risks to tuning and there are rewards.

Driving fast and driving abusively aren't necessarily the same thing, so in the context of this specific topic, people can upgrade their turbos, yes. Will it decrease the life of the engine and transmission? Yes, but powertrains don't live on dynos. Your truck could be totaled next week, or it could be retired at 150k miles. If the life of a properly maintained stock 2.0 ecoboost is materially the same as the life of a properly maintained *modified* 2.0 ecoboost, why not have some fun? The people who don't want to modify anything and care most about mpg are over in the hybrid powertrain subforum. :)

They're no longer sold, but the first WRX STi hit the road in 2004, 20 years ago, with a rated 300 hp and it weighed about 500 pounds less than a Maverick ecoboost awd.

I was just pointing out that your comment was a little silly.
The most recent STI's were kinda heavy though and I recall a few hundred more than a base, no nothing WRX.

yeah. so, point being, there are a variety of Subarus that could likely outrun Cherokee's stock ecoboost Maverick.

I'd be more worried about the clean looking, quiet '22 and up WRX rather than a clapped out 20-year-old, beat to hell STI but that's just me. Then again, there are other things worth worrying about than a Subaru but again, that's just me.

Modifications are part of the American Spirit ..... Besides the 2.0 engines are readily available at decent prices for those who can afford to push limits and need to replace one ... power to the people ;)

It took 56,000 miles, and over 1000 1/4 mile passes for my trans to finally give up the ghost. Over 200 of those passes were in the 12s. The trans is plenty strong. If you upgrade the turbo, or do all the bolt ons, just change the fluid frequently to help get rid of the excess clutch material wearing away.

I'm sure you will find a FM turbo upgrade, as lots of people got them but never put them on, or so it seems. Otherwise, you can send a turbo to CTPerformance and have them upgrade a stock Ranger/Explorer or Corsair turbo for you. The Ranger/Explorer turbo will require a slightly different downpipe setup, as the bolt pattern on the flange is slightly different.

Fast Mavericks used Comp turbos to make their upgrade, not CRP.

Happy modding!

Thanks! I actually have one of the FM ctr57 turbos on my other maverick. I was hoping to find another. The upgraded fuel pump and injectors arrive for both mavericks this weekend so I will be pushing my maverick that currently has the ctr57 to straight e85 next week. Let's see what she puts down

apparently there are not any STis on your roads? :ROFLMAO:
For sure, the Maverick is peppy and fun to drive but an STI or WRX is gonna give him a rough time, or even a Legacy 3.0r... Hell, a Toyota Sienna with the V6 will hang right alongside for a annoyingly long time.
Modern cars are ridiculously fast compared to the old junk most of us grew up with, family sedans and minivans throwing down 300hp is just hilarious to me.

Very nice! I don't think a properly setup Mav will have any issues hitting 11s with proper fueling!

Does the transmission go suddenly or is it a gradual decline?

If it does fail outside of warranty, what does a new unit cost?

I remember what a transaxle (from Ford) cost in 2000 for a 1996 SHO and it wasn't cheap.
