Misaligned Door Trim

I’m sure this has been answered before, but not sure what to search for: I’ve always wondered why the trim to the dash side of the power window switch panel doesn’t align with the switch panel itself. It’s actually a bit sharp with the exposed edge. Was this a style choice? A mistake in the panel design they didn’t get the chance to fix? I know all the Mavericks have it.

I've never looked at that. I'm guessing it's not designed to be flush. Is it possible the "lower" piece fits into a groove on the other piece to help hold it in place?
