Picked up my 2025 last night and 1st thing I did was take my 750gb Portable SSD and plug into USB port of Maverick. Super fast Indexing of my almost Full SSD with tunes. Damn Makes me Happy as I couldn't get a clear answer over the last few months what formats would play and how large of a storage device would be recognized. Now to figure out how to add a USB port someplace to do a hidden permanent install of the SSD.

Good to hear!

You could tie into the existing USB ports, either the regular way with a type a or type c cable, or you could take that apart and tap into the back of it.

I'm assuming one of those ports is what you used to test. If it wasn't, then it's possible (but unlikely) that you might not have enough power. You could deal with that in several ways if it is an issue.

Pull down the glove box -it's very easy to remove the retention on either side, and you'll see this is how you replace the cabin air filter also. find a suitable spot to mount the SSD over to the left/center from the glove box. space should exist because people have put a Kicker Key 200.4 there on a 22-24, and I doubt anything significant has changed behind/under the dash.

I would screw the SSD into a plastic or sheet metal bracket (such as one you'd use to mount the SSD into a 2.5" hotswap bay), and then screw that into the frame or possibly floorpan/chassis.

So, if I can figure out how to fill a thumb drive, a big one all I have to do is plug it in and it will show up as a source ?

Kinda. Your profile says 2024 Lariat so you have sync3, like me. Sync3 does this relatively ok as long as you don't have too many files and subfolders. A couple hundred are ok, 10,000 you'll have some serious issues. Load some music and try if you want. (I personally don't care and just pre-download songs and playlists in Spotify.)

What's noteworthy about this thread is that the OP is saying that his Sync4 system (standard in all 2025s) does it very fast.

Conversely, non-B&O 22-24 does it horribly. I mean, that can't be a surprise, they can't even display a rear view camera reliably.

Got any old Thumb Drives around ? Not sure about Older Sync 3 in the 22-24 Mav's but start with a smaller Thumb Drive No larger than 64gb (even smaller as a trial and learning tool). Format the Thumb Drive with exFat file system (You can name the Thumb Drive anything you want to make easier to find in your computer and in the Mav Radio.. Then

  • Find the files you want to transfer (Recommend start with just 1 MP3 as a test)
  • Copy and paste or drag and drop the files to the USB drive
  • Eject the drive
Plug into your USB port in the Mav. then in the audio screen select source your thumb drive should show up.

Is this a Maverick system limitation?
Really Don't know 100% on the Maverick. My older Ford Edge with early Sync3 variation 64gb was max I could get to work and only MP3 (FLAC wouldn't work). Also My older Sync 3 was not able to play SSD in a portable Drive Enclosure. What was strange I could use a portable enclosure with a standard Hard Drive (Spinning platter like in old Laptops) But leaving it in the car all the time the Heat gave the Hard Drive an early death. Gave up on trying and just got the largest Thumb Drive(s) that would work.

Mine scans 6500 files in a few minutes, at least most of the time it does. It seems to take forever if you remove the drive to make any changes to the files. It is so unpredictable. After changes, it absolutely throws fits, sometimes for 20+ minutes, and often requires multiple hard resets. It also decides not to recognize some (but not all) playlists after a few months, which requires re-loading everything. But yeah, the old Non-Sync3 system is horrible. That's the only thing I wish I could improve on my truck.

So is in my 2022 XLT a eternity or not possible ?

I'm one of those that refuse to pay for subscription based music.

I already answered that. ford connected audio will index and play a few hundred files relatively ok. it will die on tens of thousands of files.

you can use spotify and any other number of apps for free, you just have to listen to ads... just like FM radio.

I'm in your Boat with paying for Subscription / streaming music services. I have a vast collection Music I have collected over the years and stored on my Home NAS.

If you have any old Thumb Drives of any size use it for trial and error on a few MP3's to learn how to do it.

But Spotify requires either Wifi or a Network Connection and if you have a cap on your Providers Network plan (like I do) you can eat it up fairly fast. With New Maverick I get Sirius XM for a year but I'm not really a fan as I have had it before. I don't do talk radio or sports etc. I actually had a funky hack with Sirius back in around 2012. I had it as a trial for a year with a new car and if you turned off the Subscription in the car until the trial time ended (wait about 2 or 3 weeks after that date if I remember) then turned it back on somehow a flaw in Sirius system allowed it to work again. Itt worked for 6 or 7 years before Sirius (OR I) did something that cause it to stop working and required a Subscription but even with that I found my Stored Music had a higher sound quality.

ironically, if you pay for spotify you can then download media in advance which will make it use the local cache instead of streaming. I did that for years for both quality and data usage, but about a year ago my cell carrier made it cheaper to go unlimited than to keep paying per GB at the rate I used.

you'll find that if you don't have unlimited cellular data, apple maps, google maps, and waze will chew up a lot of data. 3D view in google maps is especially data-intensive.

I doubt anyone who wants to play mp3 or flac media would justify upgrading to a 2025 just for that purpose, but to me there's no question that the biggest, most impactful upgrade in MY25 is sync4, even above hybrid awd and hybrid 4k towing, because literally every Maverick benefits from sync4.

I don't think I have sync on my 24 XLT in any version, so the thumb drive was the answer. I used a small 16GB thumb drive and could not get it to read the drive. Thought maybe it was to large for the system. I ordered a package of 1GB thumb drives and labeled them for different genres of music. These work great. I brought the 16GB in and plugged it into the computer to reformat it. It wouldn't reformat and I couldn't read anything on it. That thumb drive was no good. It went in the trash. I haven't tried a different thumb larger than 1GB as I like to just swap the drive when I want to hear different music. Loads the smaller drive very quickly. That's the first thumb drive I have had fail. I usually lose them or give them away before they go bad. I am not in the truck for long periods so I can't justify a monthly subscription service. I have 268 songs on one of the 1G drives with room for more. That's big enough for me.

i'm using a 500GB mSATA drive on my 24 XLT. I've got about 54,000 tracks on it and other than taking a few minutes to index, seems to be working pretty nicely. I did notice that the USB-C port was a bit more reliable/stable than the USB-A port for this.
