Campaign/NHTSA#
24S33/24V330
Issue Date
2024-05-03
Description
Our records indicate that your vehicle recently received an update to the hybrid powertrain control module hpcm software calibration. This hpcm software can result in a forced neutral condition while driving resulting in the vehicle coasting to a stop and automatically shifting to park, along with a wrench light, multiple warning messages in the instrument panel cluster and an audible chime. After shifting back into drive the vehicle will enter a limp home mode which provides limited torque at low speeds up to 30MPH.
Safety Risk
A loss of motive power can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Ford Motor Company has authorized your dealer to update the powertrain control module pcm software free of charge parts and labor.

My Maverick is a 2023 XL Hybrid. I'm pretty sure this is a result of the software update people recieved for the dash backlight recall. I've been reading posts starting around the timr of that recall, about people experiencing this limp mode issue after having a recall performed. I haven't experienced any issues myself as of yet.

Where are you seeing this ?

Is this maybe pushed to people who supposedly got the "defective" recall back in Feb/March timing ?

In the Ford app, and when I search my VIN on NHTSA. And that was about the time that I had the dash backlight recall performed.

It does say that your vehicle received an update recently. So this is a fix to the "fix"

Well folks, looks like the limp mode issues are about to be gone (hopefully)
THIS RECALL is the 'fix' for all the limp home concerns - finally!!
It's frustrating, since this is NOT on the PTS homepage, thank you for posting this!
NOTE: small population: US population of affected vehicles: 8,697

NHTSA has Ford's Part 573 Safety Recall Report available for 24S33 24V-330, providing a little more information into what's happening here.

TLDR: If you see recall 24S33 under your VIN at https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls, https://www.ford.com/support/recalls/, or the FordPass App contact your dealer ASAP to have your PCM re-updated. Refer them to recall 24S33.

Essentially, the affected vehicles received a PCM software update that can cause a fault in the powertrain, leading to a complete loss of motive power. After the vehicle comes to a stop, it should auto shift to Park. Switching back to drive is apparently what causes the accelerating on its own to 30 mph that many here have experienced. Ford is acknowledging that there was an issue with the update, and you will need to have a newer update installed to stop/prevent this issue from occurring/recurring.

Those affected likely had 23E07, 23E09, or another recall completed which requires a PCM (powertrain control module) software update, around January, February, maybe into March or April - Ford does not specify.

Vehicle 1 : 2022-2024 Ford Maverick
Vehicle Type : LIGHT VEHICLES
Body Style :
Power Train : HYBRID ELECTRIC

Descriptive Information :
Ford’s team reviewed production dealer service records to determine the population of affected vehicles. The Ford process is capable of determining which software part numbers have been installed in production and service. Affected vehicles contain the subject Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPCM) software.

8369 Maverick vehicles are affected.

Software part numbers are contained in the warranty claims submitted by the dealer, and dealers have 30 days to submit warranty claims to Ford for reimbursement. Therefore, the number of vehicles affected by this recall may increase until all warranty claims have been submitted by dealers from the time period the suspect software was active in service. Ford will submit an update to this defect report with a revised population in 30 days.

These vehicles are not produced in VIN order. Information as to the applicability of this action to specific vehicles can best be obtained by either calling Ford’s toll-free line (1-866-436-7332) or by contacting a local Ford or Lincoln dealer who can obtain specific information regarding the vehicles from the Ford On-line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) database. Production Dates : MAR 11, 2021 - APR 04, 2024

Description of the Defect :
Affected vehicles received HPCM software that can result in a forced neutral condition while driving. As the vehicle coasts to a stop, the transmission will automatically shift to “Park”. Driver retains other functionality including power braking and power steering. Once the driver shifts back to drive, the vehicle will enter a limp home mode which provides limited torque at low speeds up to 30mph.

FMVSS 1 :

FMVSS 2 :

Description of the Safety Risk :
A loss of motive power can increase the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : Hybrid Transmission Internal Park Module (HTIPM) diagnostic software updates included in the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPCM) software are detecting a noise in the Park Motor Position Sensor, resulting in an erroneous Park Motor Position Sensor Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

Identification of Any Warning that can occur:
When this event occurs, the vehicle will go into neutral, the gear shift indicator light will flash “Drive” and instrument panel will display “Neutral”, and the vehicle does not respond to accelerator pedal inputs. Simultaneously, the driver will receive notification via wrench light and multiple warning messages in the instrument panel cluster and an audible chime.

Chronology : On March 26, 2024, Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group CCRG opened an investigation into field reports related to vehicles experiencing a shift to neutral after receiving an HPCM software update at the dealer. The powertrain controls and calibration team’s investigation determined that new Hybrid Transmission Internal Park Module (HTIPM) software released for use in service in January 2024 can result in a forced neutral condition leading to a DTC code U1010 and U1011 while driving on some vehicles shortly after installation.

As of April 15, 2024, Ford is aware of 315 warranty claims in North America that may be related to this condition.

As of May 1, 2024, Ford is aware of 125 Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQs) that may be related to this concern.

On May 3, 2024, Ford’s Field Review Committee reviewed the concern and approved a field action.

Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition.

How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :
New HPCM software will have HTIPM software that is more robust to Park Motor Position Sensor noise

You think it affects new builds Jan/Feb timing ?

I'd think it does, but the way Ford words it is unclear . 8k units ... With 24m production beginning late 23 seems low.

Per the part 573 report, affected vehicles include Mavericks built through April 4, 2024, which surely makes it sound like some new vehicles were built with the faulty software. Not just ones that were updated per other recalls.

Regardless, as the report notes, Ford has records of the latest software versions installed, both at the factory and updated at the dealer. If a vehicle was built with the defective software, it should also list 24S33 when looking up recalls by VIN.

Always good to periodically check for new recalls anyway, so anyone who has a Maverick Hybrid built in calendar year 2024 might as well check for this one.

That said, it does seem to imply that, at least for this recall, it does not include new production, only updated vehicles?

About time! Yes, this is an update for an update. This is how software works. Don’t be surprised if there are more. I’m glad to see Ford formally sent a recall notice on this. The previous (poorly coded) software update created a very dangerous scenario. As someone whom avoided the failed update in question, and does not have a Mav with these symptoms, I expect I will NOT receive this recall notice 24S33.

Ford needs to find new programmers, and better yet, stop outsourcing and own your own code!

Based on the numbers, it looks like they have identified the vehicles receiving PCM update in a time frame when the software was "suspect". My Maverick had PCM update recalls in January 2024, and doesn't have this recall.

It may be possible that some 24s had PCM updates for other reasons (not related to recalls), and those are also being flagged for the recall?

On the dealer end, it isn't telling us the time-frame of the faulty PCM software updates. That would have been interesting to know!

I'll rarely complain about recalls...but of the 4 recalls I've had the Dealer Reports they will look into the recall, will look to see what the status/availability of parts are and "will get back to me". Dealer never gets back to me.

It's not just the time frame, all they have to do is to query the database for vehicles with the affected software versions, they have that level of precision. When a module is flashed, for the first time or an update, a log entry is created.

The Ford process is capable of determining which software part numbers have been installed in production and service. Affected vehicles contain the subject Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPCM) software.
As for any 2024 MY Mavericks impacted, without having access to the VIN lists, it's hard to say. There are currently no recalls for 2024 Mavericks that include PCM updates, but of course PCM software can be updated for many reasons. The date range could be wider than it needs to be, or Ford knows something we don't.

It's interesting that affected Mavericks extend to 2024 but Escape and Corsair only go through 2022, both models having received a refresh for 2023.

My VIN# didn't require the first bad recall and as a result, isn't in the updated recall.
