Hoping there will be aftermarket products available by the time retail deliveries begun, look promising.

Ford Maverick 2022 Ford Maverick measuring session to be hosted at SEMA this week A653C9FC-9B3D-4B4C-B9FB-E376E9D63FFD

As Ford gears up to release the 2022 Maverick, so is the aftermarket. To get third parties up to speed, the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) will be hosting a measuring session from August 9-12 for the intent of developing 2022 Ford Maverick accessories and other upgrades.

SEMA will have two versions of the 2022 Ford Maverick on site at its Diamond Beach, California Garage for one of its signature measuring sessions. The event is by appointment only, and time limits are placed on attendees so as to cycle through more aftermarket companies.

SEMA measuring sessions allow aftermarket suppliers and manufacturers a hands-on first look at the trucks before they hit the market. This gives them time to develop parts so that when the trucks hit the market in the fall of 2021, consumers can begin modifying their trucks how they like and making them more and more their own.

2022 Ford Maverick Measuring Session

The two Ford Maverick pickup trucks SEMA will have available for measuring vary, each with entirely different trim and equipment. The first will be a Ford Maverick XLT with the 2.5L hybrid four-cylinder base engine, mated to the CVT sending power through the front wheels. The other model on site will be a Ford Maverick Lariat with the optional 2.0L EcoBoost and 8 speed automatic, along with the FX4 Package and all-wheel-drive.

Buy Less Truck to Buy More Parts

The Maverick, which starts at $19,995, was debut by the automaker earlier this summer to much fanfare due in part to its bonkers low entry price (although that’s likely to eventually change) and standard hybrid option. That price point is key for the aftermarket, because the less you spend on a vehicle out the door means that more money could potentially be spent on said vehicle down the road. After all, the automotive aftermarket at large isn’t expected to generate $527 billion USD in revenue by 2027 because customers are scaling back their personalization purchases.

It’ll be fun to see how the aftermarket community takes to the newest member of the Ford Truck line-up, but if SEMA’s backing it, it’s safe to say we’ll see some fun builds, both on and off road, in the future. It’s only a matter of time until you see a 2022 Ford Maverick rolling around on 35-inch tires, so Rough Country and Superlift better be ready.

Because time is limited for each vendor and manufacturer, I wonder how many will bring a standard and laser scan the exterior/interior and engine bays. That might not be allowed.

I would think that some vendors would because that would the quickest most accurate way to get interior measurements I'm thinking. Doesn't one of the aftermarket floormat companies tout that they use lasers to get accurate measures? Also the article states they'll have a Hybrid model on hand, so we now know where one Hybrid build went! lol

This measuring is specifically designed to allow aftermarket firms to take measurements with accuracy that will allow the engineering of new products. Yes laser measuring are part of that process,

"measuring session" LOL

What's the actual point of these anymore? Does Ford not share the OEM CAD with SEMA members until a certain date? I would think aftermarket manufactures would prefer OEM CAD to start designing from.

We've already seen the Air Design components, so they've obviously had their hands on a Maverick and definitely the OEM CAD as well. They must be "in" with Ford more than other aftermarket companies..
With laser measuring devices they don’t need the CAD files. This is what SEMA is all about, it exists for providing aftermarket products to the consumer.

CAD will always have better model fidelity than a scanner can produce. Scanners for the most part (and especially hand held ones) produce garbage models. I'm speaking as a machinist turned mechanical engineer. If Ford is giving out CAD models, I cannot imagine any reason to use a scanner. A good pair of calipers and a tape measure would be more useful if they are given CAD.

Being able to see have tactile interaction is probably the only useful thing SEMA provides at this point.

I would never use a handheld scanner, but when we do buildings or architectural details we place a standard in the scanning area and get very good results

but the scanners are portable on tripods, the standards are the same as used by usgs and we scan bigger objects.

if Ford is providing cad files, the hands on will only add to the ability to see interaction and how much you can push/pull during install removal.

I knew a machinist in my water jet days that could pick up a part and replicate it including heat treating by feel, color and heft. As an apprentice engineer I was amazed at Mike’s experience and expertise

The OEMS do provide CAD files to some aftermarket partners of SEMA depending on what components or areas of the vehicle it involves. The measuring sessions are a way the aftermarket companies can verify fit with concept prototypes they might bring, measure with laser devices to verify as built like interior floors with carpeting (like Weathertech would), and to get fine engineering details from the OEM that might not be provided to consumers in the technical specs. It's always good to get eyes on an area you plan to bolt something to.

Between CAD files and this measuring session, this is how a lot of these aftermarket companies will have their first accessories to show off at the SEMA show in November. At least in prototype form. ;)

I do suppose good results is a function of the tolerances you are targeting or need. Most of the stuff I do is +/-.001 to +/- .0001 which is not really in the range of 3d scanners I have seen. Still the tech is advancing quickly, so I would not be surprised if something like that is about to come out or already out and I have not seen it yet.

I learned my trade in a shop full of guys like that, been machining for 10 years now and some of the old timers still amaze me with their ability to "feel" a part. They grew up on manual machines, which definitely impart the feel side of machining in a different way to the 5/7 axis CNC machines I program and run.

Sorry for getting off topic!

No objection from me. Just to brag though, if you want to talk small, when I was working on waterjets it was a stream size down to 20 microns at up to 200k psi (water does interesting things between 60k and 200k psi)

the next time I worked in fluid dynamics I made “really small drops” 20nm was pretty large, 14 was our target. We used lasers to count the drops (lysosomes carrying chemo payloads wrapped in antibodies)

so I get tolerances most of the guns I have built get taken to 0.001 or better tolerances. Defends on the part, some need tighter.

The Maverick is not the first or last car that these aftermarket firms at a SEMA measuring session. Bottom line this is a great sign that there will some aftermarket products when deliverpies start or very shortly thereafte.

Ford has been smart they have always gotten the aftermarket companies involved with a new car. Look at all the aftermarket products available for the New F-150 and Bronco even before we got our hands on them. This is what gives Ford a leg up on the other car companies.

The fitting session is a bell-ring towards OEMS to shit or get off the pot, or your competitors will beat you.

If anyone is listening I'd like to see if and where there are tapped holes under the weather stripping on the cab roof. Roof rails are going to be a hot seller for this platform.
