Saw a question somewhere about using a 1UP rack on a Maverick so here's what I did. I had the 2" drop piece from another car I owned that I purchased on Amazon so I locked it into place and then added my rack. It moves the rack back about 4" which isn't ideal but it clears the tailgate so I'm good to go. The drop piece doesn't fit as tight as the 1UP so I'll look into tightening it up with a shim or something to keep it from moving. Should work fine like this though.

I was so confused why on earth you would extend it till I saw that last pic, that's brilliant!

Do you have any concerns with the added leverage or figure its more than strong enough for bikes?

None. They don’t weigh enough. The actual point of this is to lower it not extend but I didn’t take a photo of the tailgate hitting the rack without the drop.

So I guess that drop allows you to lower the tailgate without hitting it? I got a rack from Hollywood racks that allows you to dip the rack down to a lower angle for clearing stuff like that. But once you put it back up in the right spot for storing a bike it wouldn't clear it

Yes the main purpose is to lower the pivot point to clear the tailgate.

Im going to add a hitch tightened like this to keep the adapter from moving

That 1-UP looks like a way nicer rack than my KAC for certain. I ended up going with an 11" straight extender, which I do recommend. I can easily get behind the tailgate. In term of weight, the tongue is rated at 400 lbs. Any extender/adapter cuts that in half. So you just gotta keep it under 200 lbs. Might only be an issue for 3-4 heavy bikes. Try a long extender, it's dope for $41, IMO. Has an anti-rattle bolt but no lock*. Way cheaper than a fancy $600 swing-away adapter.

*Bike Rack is locked to extender, but extender is only bolted to hitch. I need a chain lock to secure the rack.

Can you use a locking pin to secure the extender to the receiver?

The Maverick hitch has 1 hole, the extender has 2. So I don't think so, because there is only 1 hole. The yellow anti-rattle device can be removed though. It only uses one side, so I might look at some type of shallow stub lock that would use the other sides' hole. Would the pin work for this? Else, I'll have to chain lock it to the hitch itself. Right now I've just been biking away from cities.

Point being, there are many extender options to measure out and see what would work with your rack.

I’m using a lock on the extender and a lock on the rack. No issues.
