Included are photos of camper, Maverick, and Yellowstone National Park. Hello yes I put our Maverick to the test.

Our trip of 4500 miles started in Ocean Shores WA. Took us to unbelievable Yellowstone National Park, down to San Angelo Texas, then back home.

Here's some numbers to think about are A-frame pop-up camper weights in at 1850 pounds. That's no water or propane in the tanks or food, chairs or bedding. Anyway you add all that plus a Generator, two suit cases and other things that fill up the bed. Yes, all that plus two adults and a dog and I'm sure we're at are max 2000 pound tow capacity maybe a bit more.

For freeway driving speeds I did mostly 72 or 67 MPH, posted limits 75/ 80 or 65 MPH. The mountain roads didn't slow the Maverick one little bit, but it was the first time I saw the percentage of engine go above 25 percent. In fact depending on the grade of the hill or how quickly the grade changed. I started seeing as well as hearing the motor racing, as the percentage would sometimes rise as high as 80 percent. I felt confident in the Maverick's ability to handle the task.

As far as the trucks water temperature, it stayed safely in the normal less than one half of display. Outside temperatures ran the gambit from the 50s to 110 degrees.

Now for the mileage, now this is highway and is averaged (22.7 MPG). I am very happy with this, it's a big shift from the 50.4 MPG we get without the load but I'm not complaining.

It's also a shift up from pulling a 1600 lb. nuCamp trailer like we did a few years ago with a Honda Ridgeline. We got about 14 mpg.

Not knowing anything else, that sounds like the most awesome trip I've ever heard of. That's some impressive driving too. Trailer brakes on that camper? Side mirrors?

I have to say, the trip meter reading 50 mpg (unweighted) is really probably in the mid 40's. I'm finding a 3-4 mpg difference against the pump. I'm happy if the combined mileage stays in the upper 30s. Mine says 42mpg over 7k mi, so probably more like 39-40 actual.

Hi, yes it was a very impressive trip, I'd have to say a definite bucket list one to check off for sure.

As far as brakes the popup has emergency electric brakes if it came loose from the tow vehicle, that's all.

I tell you that I had no issues at all with stopping with the trailer attached. The brakes on the Maverick are huge.

I did have scrap on extention mirrors on, but lost one due to a ruff wash board patch on the road that we were on.

The trip itself was very good, 2 week's from start to finish.

As for mileage (22.7 MPG) the average posted is from the display on the Maverick.

The 50.4 MPG is figuring mileage (math) miles traveled divided by gallons of gas used or filled up that is. This came out better than the Maverick's display which showed only 48.4 MPG.

So the fully loaded mileage may actually be higher.

What bug deflector are you using? I just bought the Ford peel and stick one and found that the final wipe you need to use basically removes the clear coat and that this is considered a permanent install. Hesitant to use this now and wonder what you using that looks like it's not affixed to the hood. TIA

Great article and glad you had a great trip. Very impressed with the pop up camper. If you don't mind, either post or PM me where these are found so I can check them out. I have a motor home, but would like something like this for some trips where I do not have to enjoy that 8 mpg I get from the Winnebago.

Hi I used an EGR 303591 superguard hood guard off Amazon.
It uses metal bracelets that hold the plastic hood guard about an inch above the hood and it's removable too as it's attached with screws To the brackets.

Hi it's a Forest River A-frame Rockwood.
Setup is a breeze, takes about a minute.
It has two beds, table, stove sink, microwave, outside shower, grill.

Are there any exposed screws? The reviews say there are exposed screws somewhere. Thanks!

Hi, there are exactly 6 screws holding it on.
They blend in very well with the smoke tinted hood protector.
I took this picture at night with my garage lights on, Showing one of the screws.
You can see the screw in the picture because of the light, I personally think that it's the best option.

Hello, we
Great post, thank you. Now if I only could get my wife to downsize to a pop up...but no she wants a freaking Tiffin motorhome. 🤣
We had a 24' Mercedes motorhome really nice, but we didn't tow a car. So we had to drive it everywhere (not so much fun). The popup is OK but we're on the older side and finding it a bit small for us for long trips. We're thinking of either selling it and doing hotels or maybe keeping it for just weekend getaways.

To contrast and compare:

San Fransisco to B.C. Canada to Yukon Canada to SE Alaska to B.C Canada to Alberta Canada to San Francisco - 5,360 miles in just under 3 weeks.
There's NO flat earth on this route and some grades of 11% 9% 8% 7% and every 20th mile it seems in the 6% zone. Plus some light duty off roading with a trailer.

2022 Hybrid XLT
770 pounds in the truck
3,000 pound trailer*
62 MPH / 100 km/h
18 MPG hand calculated from pump receipts.

*Electric brakes with aftermarket brake controller and additional aftermarket equipment on Maverick.
