I didn't want to use a bike carrier or tailgate pad. So U used a 2x6 upfront. I had to block out the fork mounts and have them at different heights to get the bikes to fit. The smallest doesn't have quick release tires so I made a tire holder and use a clamp to keep it tight.

They are 20 inch, 26 inch and 29 inch bikes. The 26 inch is just a tiny bit too long to close the tailgate. I could probably move it around to get it to work, but it is my son's and he wouldn't be taking the truck without me so I always have the 29er.

It stinks to have to ride with the tailgate down, but with the extender there is enough room to put extra gear if needed.

When you say the smallest bike doesn’t have quick release wheels, do you mean that it uses a though-axle mount, instead of a fork mount? If so, they make through axle mounts for bike carriers. My bike uses a Rockshox Maxle, which requires a through axle mount, and requires turning a single Allen wrench to remove it. Or, I could change it out to a Maxle ultimate that looks like a quick release on one side, that you can spin with your fingers, as it only require 9 lb/ft. Probably much more stable over bumps or through corners than your pvc pipe set up.

this looks pretty nice but I'm not sure what's worse...

taking the front tires on/off two times
putting my hitch bike rack on and putting the bikes on it

I originally was thinking of getting the tailgate pad but I don't want to mess up my paint job at this time.

No it is a cheap Walmart bike. You need a wrench to take the tire off. It is a 1 year bike as my boy will move up next spring.

I made a triangle tire rack from PVC. It is fairly snug. Once the tire is in, I put a small bar clamp trough the spokes. It squeezes it even tighter. Bike hasn’t moved all summer.

I am with you on both thoughts. I hate my hitch rack though. I don’t know why, I just loath using it. I have become pretty quick over the summer with this. I store the bikes with the front tires off which helps.

And I don’t see how tailgate pads don't don’t do damage over time.

I love watching stupid people do stupid things. Slowly their genes are removed from the gene pool.
Not sure if they do get removed. I think they procreate more.

For me taking the wheel off/on is more of a hassle. I used a Seasucker rack when I had a Subaru Impreza and was done dealing with taking the whee off.

I made a rack that can go in the bed out of 80/20 extrusion and 1Up can trays that I used for a little while and will still use if I need to carry 2 bikes. If I’m only carrying my bike I use a hitch mount Yakima single bike rack.

Only have 2 bikes but i think 3 would fit. I just put the front tire over the bed extender and use a couple ratchet straps to keep them upright

Hers is my option,. no need to remove wheels. Use a furniture blanket at the side.
