In addition to the highway test I performed a few weeks ago, I have been in the middle of a city driving fuel efficiency test. Today I report on those results. the test compares the following driving modes; Normal, Eco, sport and Slippery. I hope the table formats are ok. They are not the easiest to format in the forum. I guess I could have tried to attach the excel spreadsheet.

Some of the test specs, to keep it as fair and comparable as possible;
  • primarily the same routes to and from work
    • some minor differences in arrival and departure locations or required routes due to one-way roads
  • I tried to drive in my normal fashion with little use of the EV coach
    • Speeds include everything from 0-65 MPH pretty much every day
    • No highways were harmed or even used in the making of this post
    • the 65 MPH bit is on a 45 mph controlled access road on which driving is a death sentence
      • The 65 bit is not that fast on the way home, which also supports the better mpg in the PM sections.
  • Commute times were at about the same times of day
  • Since this test was primarily done in March, in Georgia, temperatures ranged greatly from high 20'sF in the early month mornings, to 85F in the late test afternoons.
  • All metrics taken from the My Trip info card.

I am not terribly surprised by any of the results, having read about the driving modes prior to doing these tests. I would have thought that eco mode was a little better than it was, compared to normal mode. I do think we had a bit of a cold snap during the eco mode week, which would have affected fuel efficiency. Plus my Mav still has less than 1000 miles, so it is still breaking in. I may do the next two weeks retesting eco and normal modes, to see if the temperature effect is apparent.

I didn't mind driving in slippery mode, but the braking profile did cause me to have to short stop a few times when I was less than diligent in accounting for the lessened regen braking.

Sport mode is for form and function, not fuel economy.

FYI for braking in Slippery mode - most the regen is stacked in the bottom about 20% of the gauge - or whatever the 25MY is setup to show you.
I think with your newer gauge you actually don't get to see this.
So it might be hard to nail that final hard regen area, much like it can be hard to toe the line at 10% power to stop ICE from turning on.

Great tests.
I think this shows how close some modes are - and how other variables that could be very different between driving scenarios could favor 1 over another.

Someone with a lot of stop & go where they can toe that 10% line, might benefit most from the increased regen given in Eco mode.

Someone with good coasting opportunities Slippery mode is easily done.

My terrain and traffic gives Normal mode the advantage. Unless I visit specific streets & areas then Sport just begs to be used.
I've tried Slippery, but as you experienced, the fine line between heavy regen braking and digging into rotors takes way too much control, and is out the window with the way braking is done by many drivers.

Would love to see a similar test for the 2.0 EB.

Interesting test.

My only comment is temperature. My Mav Hybrid gets way better mpg in warmer days than cold. By a good margin. That could throw results off by a fair amount.

Wow Sport mode really sucks the fuel. I have never even tried that mode and have had mine 1.6 years. I have used slippery in the winter in snow BUT to me it seems to have little regen braking which I thought would kill MPG. Apparently not.

Nice test

I am a bit of a coaster, so it slippery seems to work okay for me. YMMV.

I am going to recreate Normal and Eco modes this week and next, plus I will revisit my hwy tests on Friday when I drive to Augusta and back. Be on the lookout for more riveting content🤡

Thank you. Wow good to know the difference between sport and normal. I have a 2.0T though but im sure it drops a few MPGs. Im getting and avg between 23.6 and 24.2 in Normal. Ill have to try it on Sport and see the difference on the 2.0s

Nice thread, I enjoy tracking our 2025 Mav's fuel burn as well...have been tracking all our vehicles every fill for decades. You can easily see if you have a sudden drop in mpg possibly indicating a problem (or winter has arrived ;-)

I can imagine your retest at warmer temperatures showed that it makes a considerable difference....as well as your truck breaking in. I have read that it takes 4 or 5000 miles till you would be getting your best mileage per gallon. My truck has been getting better as I near this point.

Thanks again for the interesting post.

Cheers

Andy

My guess would be that regen still happens, but instead of happening as soon as you lift off the gas, it happens when you "brake". So the amount of energy recovered is similar, but it happens in a different way

Im loosing between 1 and 1.5 mpg on sport mode over normal on my 2.0T after 100 miles. Its fun to drive on Sport though. But when trying to coast in hangs on to gears so it slows down fast which is probably were you loose most of the mpg as you need to accelerate more often. So for me sport will be on demand when needed and sticking to normal most the time. Im also doing a self imposed 1000 mile break in. My first to due list at 1000 will be to put on sport mode and traction control off and see what this bad boy can do!!!
