Seems you're worrying about nothing. Unless of course you've got people roaming your neighborhood carrying funnels, looking for Mavericks to F with?

There is no reason to have a lock on the gas fill door Ford has already thought of that and has prevention in place.

"Ford’s capless full filler deters gas theft two different ways. With Easy Fuel, a spring-loaded flapper door is held closed by latches that can only be released by a standard-size fuel nozzle. This eliminates the need for a fuel tank screw cap. When the proper nozzle is inserted into the filler neck of the system, the latches release, and the nozzle pushes the spring-loaded flapper door to the open position. When the nozzle is removed, the flapper door automatically is forced closed by the spring."

All of you are missing an important point. Back in the 70's it was common vandalism to put sand or sugar down the filter neck. Bye bye after a short while of driving (ugh). As others have said, fuel theft isn't a worry anymore because drilling the tank is what they do. Before anyone says it, I'm not experienced in this matter (😆) but I too wish the gas door locked even with the easy fuel/ fill system. Luckily this type of vandalism seems to be rare these days. 👍

I was around in the 1970's and no that was not common vandalism, it was nothing more than an urban legend at the time. Similar to the urban legend in the 70's and 80's that said not to flash people with their highbeams on because the other car could be part of a gang initiation and they kill anyone who flashes them. The locking gas caps wouldn't stop anyone anyway, if someone really wanted to put something in your gas tank they could just use tools to quickly break the locking gas cap.

The concern is that someone with the right funnel has access to my trucks fuel supply, I don't make enemys but mat perhaps make them jealous!
Whenever I hear someone say that they're worried about that in my person life I ask them to please answer honestly if they know anyone who that actually happened to and the answer is always "No".

Also I would say most people don't know that since the 1970's auto manufacturers have added anti siphoning mechanisms in the gas tube to make it near impossible to get a hose down the filler neck and into the tank. I found this out when I had to drop a gas tank on a car I owned several years ago and I tried siphoning the remaining gas out first with no luck.

I grew up with a Mother who was overly paranoid about the strangest things. I can't tell you how many times she came saying someone siphoned the gas out of her car or let air out of her tires. I'm certain that it never actually happened. From dealing with her paranoia for 40+ years I realized long ago there is nothing I can say to change her mind so if you're paranoid about gas theft then even facts probably won't change your mind either.

I can only add that you can buy all the locking gas doors and locking gas caps as you want. But if someone wants to steal the gas out of your car they're just going to crawl underneath and puncture the gas tank because that's the fastest way to do it.

Oh sorry, i was also around on the 70s and yes, with the utmost respect, your authority on this subject is doubtful. IN my neighborhood it was real. Perhaps you had to be in a profession where you were a target (you know all the do-good types that contribute) And, as my grandfather used to say - nothing will stop the comitted criminal but it will stop the honest criminal. Sorry i got you revved up but no need to s&p on those that want to keep their tanks pristine.

I'm not revved up, I just don't believe that was ever really a thing. We can disagree and still be friendly. Plus like I said, if you really do have enemies who want to do something like to your gas tank then a locking gas cap isn't going to stop them. They aren't that difficult to pry off.

In the 70s it was common for people to siphon gas. Esp during the two opec issues. A locking gas cap is a deterrent. Back then many had the filler behind the plate a short reach to siphon.

Well, this thread migrated from windshield wipers to fuel doors. To my knowledge domestic pickup trucks never offered standard locking fuel doors. (I could be wrong not having bought one newer than 2001 until the Maverick.) However, Ford does offer a locking plug for the newer systems if you really think you need it. My 2001 did have baffles preventing fuel theft by siphoning.

Maybe someone will come up with a forscan mod to enable remote gas cap unlocking from the cab.

I had a locking gas door on my Geo Tracker, and it was horrible. Frozen all the time in the winter. A very poor design.

Nothing can make a man beat his vehicle with his ice scraper faster than sitting in the fuel island and not be able to actually put fuel in your vehicle. ;)

A locking gas cap in the 70's sometimes resulted with someone punching a hole in the gas tank with an ice pick to get gas which was a lot more expensive to repair than missing a few gallons of gas.
