I am glad it is included. Tailgates are designed to be easily removed. It is also nice to lock your tailgate even without a cover to keep it from being stolen.
The locking tailgate might be helpful to keep a casual thief from taking items out of your bed if you have a tonneau or hard shell, but it will do little to deter a thief that wants your tailgate. That flimsy tailgate lock can be quickly punched out with a screwdriver and the tailgate lifted off like the lock wasn’t even there.

If you’re really concerned about your tailgate being stolen, a much better deterrent is a hinge lock like the McGard sold by FMC for $29. Just put it on and forget about it. These devices are specifically designed to keep your tailgate secure.

A glorified worm clamp isn't going to stop a determined thief, either.

That's might be right and most theft deterrents are for the casual or not so sophisticated thief or for kids being annoying. But a seasoned pro of a thief wont mess around with just a tailgate when it would take the same level of effort for them to take the whole truck. So I am happy with my "flimsy" tailgate lock.

With a locking tailgate and a shell topper, hard trifold or a rolling tonneau cover, the truck bed is pretty secure and you can put things in there that would otherwise need to be in the cab to be secured. The locked tailgate also prevents access to the tonneau cover releases. With a soft top you can just knife it to get into the bed.
Exactly why I opted for the more expensive hard tonneau cover.
