WolfBox G900 TriPro Electronic Rear View Mirror

BACKGROUND

• I received the G900 TriPro for free via this MTC contest but these opinions are my own without influence from WolfBox.
• At the time, I was already running the WolfBox G840S (which I purchased) as I needed an electronic rear view mirror since my camper blocks my rear window.
  • The G840S served me well. I would recommend this to anyone.
    • PROS
      • Worked reliably in the 1+ year that I ran it.
      • Wide field of view. Eliminated blindspots. I could always see who was coming along side of me. It's not uncommon for people to speed up and pull next me because they haven't seen anything like a Maverick with camper on it before. A lot of Mavericks do it too.
    • CONS
      • I travel cross country and in many different climates. I have had my camera compromised by fog and ice in cold weather. I would have to wipe it down before I drive. I have also had times where the camera visibility was momentarily compromised in heavy rain.
      • The G840S was bright enough to get the job done but I always wish it was brighter (than the max brightness). The anti-glare film did help but I still wish it was brighter. It was also bright enough to see though even when driving towards a bright sunset/sunrise.
      • My GPS never pointed in the right direction. I did like having it on the display even though it was wrong. I just learned to "rotate it about 90 degrees".
        • For example, I park the rig outside facing east but my display would say it was pointed north.

UNBOXING
I got both the G900 TriPro and a hardwire kit.

The G900 TriPro does come with everything you need to get started but you will have to power with the included 12V CLA.

The hardware kit allows you to power through constant 12V (via "add-a-fuses") which will enable parking mode (and will record if your the camera detects a bump/shock). FWIW, I had my G840S hardwired and never ran into battery drain issues.

INSTALL
First, I uninstalled my G840S (not pictured). I removed the mirror and rear camera (and wires). I did leave my existing hardwire kit. I'll likely swap it out but I had a very small install window.

Normally the mirror just straps onto your existing rear view mirror via included elastic bands. I drive on some pretty rough roads and wanted a more robust mount. Fortunately WolfBox does sell a hardware mount which I did use on my G840S. First order of business was to transfer the hardware mount onto my G900 TriPro. On unboxing, I initially thought the G900 TriiPro was bigger than my G840S. After getting them side-by-side, I confirmed they are the same size.

Most people would take of the hooks and straps. I'm generally function over form (and am not concerned with looks) and like that there is storage behind my mirror. Will I ever use it? Probably not. I never did with G840S. But I like to know that I could if needed.

I then mounted the mirror in the rig and started wiring. First the front camera. I didn't take any pictures of the install but I mounted the camera under my front plate.

I routed the wires through the engine bay being careful to keep the cable away from any hot components. It runs from the engine bay through the passenger side fender then up the A pillar.

Next was my rear view camera which I also don't have my pictures of the install. I didn't want to create any intrusions into my camper so I ran it the same way I ran my G840S rear camera wiring... around the (and embedded the channels of the extrusion in my) camper and entires into the passenger side door at the B pillar. Then through the headliner to meet the front camera wire at the top of the A pillar.

I was now at a point where I could test the display and cameras (with rough wiring).

There are four wires at the top of the camera. From left to right, power, front camera, GPS, rear camera. All looked in order so I started to button things up. The wires go down the stalk of the mirror mount then up through the center-roof console into the headliner. I have a black cord wrap that wraps around the mirror mount stalk and wires so you don't see them. The wires then go back over to the top of the A pillar and down the A pillar. If you follow this same install be mindful and careful with the airbags in the A pillar. Tread lightly, and run your wires behind the airbags. At the bottom of the A pillar in the passenger corner of the firewall there is a nice spot to stash excess wire.

Then I placed the A pillar panel back in place and install was done. To my dismay, the G900 TriPro still has the same incorrect GPS heading as my G840S. I am still working with WolfBox to get this resolved (hopefully).

I have used it around town and am itching to get it a situation where I could use the trail cam. For me, it will be a big help when trying to level out the rig to camp for the night. There are times when I have to drive up on a small rock or on my traction boards to get level. I could also see using to parallel into tight spots (as you can see I park on the street a lot).

I'll update this post with more pics as I use it more. I am happy with the product. Its a nice addition to the rig.

Good on you for disclosing that it was free. I was struggling to understand why someone would go pay literally 3x as much as the 840s for a G900 3 cam set-up. The only addition is a new front or interior can right?

It would be good to show how you routed the front camera - assuming through the firewall somewhere and over the radiator. The rear camera is routed through the dome light assembly?

Does the front camera have a wide angle / distorted FOV like the rear camera or anyway to tell how far something is in front of you?

For the most part. I do consider the brighter screen an added feature also.

For now, I just have it ran outside the bumper. I have it on the project list to pull my bumper to perform the ACC conversion and to install my foglights. At that time I’ll permanently route this cable behind the bumper.

It is routed through the channels in the passenger side fender, through the door, and up the A pillar.

The rear camera is routed through the dome light assembly?

No. It’s routed down the side of my camper right into the front passenger door then into the headliner.

Lots of work to do on the camper including swapping out the rusting hardware, cleaning up (solar, cell booster, Starlink, lighting) wiring.

Does the front camera have a wide angle / distorted FOV like the rear camera or anyway to tell how far something is in front of you?

The mirror itself does not provide any distance references (like reverse lines for the rear). In my opinion, the Mav is pretty flat nosed so if you are tall enough to see the edge of your hood then you have a general idea of another foot of clearance ahead of that (generously).

What adapter did you purchase to mount the Wolfbox to the windshield mount - I am waiting on my Wolfbox G900 TriPro Cabin Cam to arrive and perfer to replace the OEM Mirror than to use the straps - thanks
