Wireless charger overheating?

I have a Galaxy S23 and when I use the wireless charger the phone gets very hot and doesn't seem to charge much.

I've had to use a plug-in charger. Am I the only one experiencing this?

It seems like the cubby needs ventilation

Wireless charging results in heat being generating as there is no way for power to be transmitted without loss. That loss generates heat.

The wireless system in the Maverick is of average quality. And if you are using Carplay or Android Auto while driving and charging it will definitely get really hot.

Tim, I have a Pixel 8a. I had it on the wireless charger the other day, while driving, and was also using wireless Android Auto for navigation, and it did get rather warm. It was just over an hour.

I believe it only charged 4% in that time, also. I think it was drawing almost as much as it was charging.

I didn't notice anything else amiss, though. It didn't hang up or act glitchy atleast.

Yes I am using Wireless AA which turns on both the WIFi and Blietooth antenna. The phone gets toasty hot. If ford adds wireless AA they are going to have to address better phone cooling during the summer. Perhaps redirect some of the air to the charging area.

I've found 2 things, if I'm using my M1A motorola adapter with my S23, wireless charging can't quite keep up. Not terrible if I start a journey at 100% battery charge but if I'm at 30... I'm gunna be dead (or close) by the time I drive 500 km. Secondly, I put a divider in and use an independent wireless charger ... just a high quality one.

Yep it's basically useless. So let's remove one of the most functional exterior features on a vehicle which is the keypad and replace it with what is basically a hotplate in the console. Now if it heated up my ham sandwich while on the road I would say great! But alas it only serves to draw who knows what multitude of amps while baking the internals of my phone. The pet rock earns higher points for ingenuity.

Oh and I forgot to mention as you already know, any protective case must be removed for wireless current to transfer. What a PITA.
One bonus is fuse position 18 in the BCM panel (7.5 A) looks like an attractive tap site for the ACC when hardwiring a dashcam. Since I'm never going to use the hotplate again, why not?

Me: iPhone 8 - on the Ford pad, it charges but slowly in the Otterbox case, gets warm but not hot. To speed up the process I don't use any apps while charging. My wife's iPhone 14 almost always needs to be charged and it is conveniet for her to just set her phone on the pad. My '22 Lariat didn't have it [no lux pkg] and I didn't miss it.

Yes it heats up the phone. My friends phone got very hot. It was a newer iPhone

Yep, same problem with Pixel 7. I think I'm going to attach it to the a/c vent instead of the cubby mount.

I can see slow charging as being the pads problem but how is a phone getting hot the pads fault? Seems like if the pad put out more power the phone would get even hotter.

I use an "SP Connect" mount/phone case, which raises much of the phone slightly off the charger, but it still seems to charge ok? It does get warm(hot?) but it's hard to quantify if it's too hot?

It does have a metal ring that matches up with SP Connect's wireless charger for motorcycles, so maybe that helps transfer energy here, too?

Only using the phone for navigation and not music, it does go postive in charge rather than negative over time. Very very slowly, though.

It can be mitigated by directing cool air into that area or making the layer between the charging coil and phone out of a thinner material so there isn't as much energy loss to heat.
