I hear you, lots of dump trucks on my commute as well, at least most of them use the required covers on the dumps.
They have the covers but not real tight. Got to stay away. Plus the get in the left hand lane doing 40 up the hill passing another dump doing 35. They suck

Mine has some chips but is holding up surprisingly well overall. Previous Escape had some chips and a good size ding. Previous Tacoma not a scratch. Previous Crosstrek not a scratch. Previous F150 cracked multiple times to the point where I just gave up replacing it. Previous RAM not a scratch. j

It's either windshields getting worse or roads getting worse and where I live it's more than likely the roads. Not much can be done. Most of the rocks here come from oncoming traffic from assholes without mudflaps and poking tires - which I think should be a law same as tarping, but here in MT where logging is common they don't tarp and our laws on that stuff are lax, so obviously dumps don't have to tarp either. Regardless, roads SUCK where I live.

You can drive perfect distances and still get cracks/chips but yes, some people do follow too close. I've seen giant rocks take 3 or 4 bounces though. Specifically one that hit my windshield as I watched in what felt like slow motion from an oncoming truck. I won't presume to tell someone to stay further back because I don't believe it's the cause of so many windshield chips on newer vehicles, I think there is definitely something going on in the windshield manufacturing that involves cutting costs but without proof it's all speculation. Yes, there are "standards" but how many of them are met with minimal expectations in perfect condition testing environments without variables factoring in? Obviously windshield angles and driving habits are a factor, but I don't think they are the total cause to how many reports we get now days.

I would like to know how many of us are having problems with the poor-quality windshield and getting chips from tiny objects hitting it. At 8,000 miles, I have 4 chips in the windshield, and none of them were from large objects. I thought I had read that many of you had the same problem. I am planning to try and get Ford to do something about it, but knowing the number of incidents would be helpful.
I have 8 chips in my windshield, had them repaired at a glass shop I got my first chip only 5 miles for the dealer on my way how after taken possession of my new truck, and it just seems to be soft glass,

Just curious is this your first vehicle? Not trying to be sarcastic but how is that the vehicle's fault? I have 42,500 miles on my maverick. The original windshield lasted much longer than expected in arizona. The replacement one had a chip three days after installation. I was on the freeway and I Truck tire threw a rocket. Not my marriage falt. Maybe next on my next windshield I'll get the Ceramic coating installed

I'd be curious if there is any quantitative evidence to support the theory of "soft glass"? Perhaps someone has performed a simple Rockwell hardness test on different samples and shown a change? I was under the impression that standard automotive windshield glass hardness is a constant based on the standard chemistry of the soda-lime glass that is used for automotive windshields.
This.☝
It's the vertical rake of the Maverick windshield, not any difference in glass quality. Ask any glass shop how many jeep windshields they replace. A lot of 'em.

My 2024 xlt got a chip in the windshield already also at about 1500 miles which I have 2300 on it now.its very small but noticeable and only one so far but took nothing to get it there.anything might shatter it.

Ford is not going to do anything about it.

Had to replace mine on 5th day of ownership from a rock hit. On the 2nd one now, 3 little chips and one bullet hole that was filled ( can see it fully, but not expanding) . Mind only complaint about the Maverick.

Yup 3 chips inside of 1000 miles of ownership. I now just keep a bottle of resin on hand and some uv strips and uv flashlight in the glove compartment.

I've already replaced one windshield and now have 2 big chips in my second. I only have 10,000 miles on the truck.

Actually I believe this is an issue with the windshield glass as a whole industry. Living here in Arizona we go through windshields so quickly due to all the dirt dust and sand in the air in general. It seems like only after a year maybe, our windshields get scarred and pitted and I have Safelite change our glass

I got caught in a brief but intense sand storm in CA. outside of Barstow and must have about a million little pits in the glass. Looked at getting it replaced and was told it would be about a grand. It's only an issue when the sun comes blasting in at certain times of the day and occasionally at night if headlight's hit it just right. I am planning and saving up the funds to do this.
