You could definitely overdo it. I have no doubt. As old Forrest Gump said, "Stupid is as stupid does."I get very uneasy around trucks with very deep and wide wheels replacing the stock ones. Saw one on the side of the interstate with the whole right front tire/wheel/rotor/caliper and part of the suspension laying on the ground. The stress that puts on everything apparently did it in.
On my truck, the aftermarket Fifteen 52 Traverse MX wheels are actually factory size/spec. So, any weight difference should be negligible.
As for the tires, the 245/70/17 Firestone Destination AT2s I am running are listed at 34.759 pounds per tire on the official Firestone website. So, how does that compare to the "factory" tires offered by Ford?
Well, if you upgrade to the 235/65/17 Falken Wildpeak AT Trails (standard on Tremor and optional on others), they are listed at 35.1 pounds on the Falken website -- actually a bit HEAVIER than the tires I am running.
And the 225/76/17 Pirelli Scorpion ATRs that come standard on FX4 models doesn't actually have a listed weight on the Pirelli website. A Google search says 31 pounds, give or take, depending on which site you are looking at.
Point is, as a vehicle owner I do try to take care of my stuff and actually pay attention to this sort of thing when making decisions. My wheel/tire setup is comparable to OEM/stock offerings from Ford. To me, it's perfectly reasonable.
Anyone else is free to disagree. That's why some folks won't go an ounce or an inch out of factory spec on anything, while others will modify the pinch welds on their trucks and run 33s or 35s. It takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.
