Water Spot Nightmare – Anyone Else Struggle With This?

Picked up my Space White Maverick back in February here in a snow-heavy area. I planned to do my own ceramic coating once the weather improved—and finally got around to it today... or at least I thought I did.

As soon as I started prepping, I noticed crazy water spotting on the hood and especially on the black roof. I tried Chemical Guys Water Spot Remover—absolutely no effect. Then moved on to some cutting compound, which helped a bit, but I can still clearly see the outlines of the spots, particularly on the roof.

I've never had water spots this stubborn before on any vehicle. It’s like they’re etched into the clear coat.

Anyone else notice their Maverick being extra prone to this?
Any product recommendations or tricks that have worked for you?

For now, I just gave it a solid wax to hold me over until I can find a better solution. Open to any tips—would love to hear what’s worked for others.

If those water spots have minerals (ex: calcium from road salt), normal white vinegar at 5% acetic acid should dissolve them pretty much instantly.

If you want something stronger for stubborn spots, you can buy cleaning vinegar which is 10% acetic acid

Just tried the 10% >..no bueno. Didn't do anything. Do I let it sit on there, or just wipe it.

I clay barred then applied graphene on my a week after I took delivery in Jan 2025 no problems here and I would think the green would definitely show if there were any

It's funny you mention this. Just yesterday, I finally got around to washing, clay baring and hand waxing my Maverick after over a month of rainy weather. Overtime, I have noticed the paint seems to be brittle when it comes to hard water staining. And, it doesn't even have to be from water, it can simply be from natural elements.

For example, we have a big oak tree in the front yard. Some of the limbs drape over the right side of the driveway which is over the car's right side. Because of that, I get the inevitable tree sap drips on that very side. If I go to spray detail it off, it either bleeds right through or I have to really scrub at it to get it off completely. The Maverick is the only vehicle where imperfections from the elements aren't so easy to wipe off. It's like the etch themselves into the paint no matter how much protection there is.

Since I'm an old-fashioned traditionalist, I've been using one product for the last fifteen years for cases like this. I use Meguiar's Cleaner Wax which not only adds depth, it can help buff small scratches and swirls. If you haven't used it already, I'd give that a shot. If it doesn't work, at least you'll have it for other purposes.

They should dissolve real quick

If you want to try leaving it on there, soak a paper towel with vinegar and lay it flat on there then drizzle a bit more on top. Leave it on there for 10-20 minutes. If it still doesn't come off, it isn't minerals. Maybe an acid? Do you have any industrial plants nearby? A friend used to live by a kiln that processed lime, anyone downwind from there used to get some crazy fallout on their cars and houses

When I have vehicles with water spots I will use wheel acid. If that does not work it’s a full buff

If water spot removers don't change anything it sounds like something etched into your clear coat and you'll have to buff it to blend the clear coat level.

I noticed the water spots on my cactus gray the first time I washed it. Now I just wash the doors and fenders, not the roof or hood.

I've used a solution of cleaning vinegar with a bit of water. Very effective at removing the spots. Also good as a window cleaner.

I got a green Maverick 3 months ago. The very first time I washed it, it got those dreaded spots. And yes, they do show really well on the green. I just finally gave up trying to get them off. I hand wash it a lot, as I live on gravel roads. Now I either wash and immediately dry each section, or my husband washes and I follow along and dry. The original spots have faded quite a bit. I doubt anyone even notices them. It's really annoying to have to do this though.

I use to get bad water spots on my vehicles while washing that are a pain to get out. What I started doing is to keep the vehicle wet until it's time to dry. At that point I take my towel and then dry it off before the standing water has time to dry.
