I haven't had this issue in a Maverick but this sounds like a USB power problem. USB port doesn't have enough power capacity to charge phone and use a large SSD.
Likely this.
Have you tried an 8gb USB drive to see if it works simultaneously with Android Auto?

I have an older laptop that won't even recognize anything over 8gb on boot due to power requirements. Found this out when installing Linux.

So keep in mind, Ford doesn't stick strictly to the USB standard. It is a hybrid that is speed limited to 480Mbps, but I've tested the charging amperage at something like 2-3 amps. It can definitely provide more than 500mA.

The port puts out enough power that it can fry some Thumb-Drives. Came out of the theatre one night last year, and it started to skip and locked up playing. The drive was actually 'hot' feeling when I pulled it out. (I'm not positive the power is cut-off on the USB port when powered off, or may on occasion stay powered). In any event, the drive no longer works reliably.

Now full disclosure, it's near identical mate, just a different size 16gb vs 32gb, bought at the same time, also died and felt warm in my wife's '25 Forester after a couple weeks. They were both HP 'mini' sized drives, so possibly something with the HP drives doesn't modulate or handle over amperage very well, given the original USB1.0/2.0 spec was a maximum current of 500ma. They were USB2.0 and not the newer USB3.x drives, FWIW have a current limit of 900ma with a charging limit of 1.5a. (Yes, USB-C has a limit of 5a, and auto-negotiates the power level, even allowing up to 20v or 100w, but NOT the USB-A/B device spec).

Just be careful what drive you use, and make sure they're not getting hot. The small barely there drives that sit flush would be more susceptible to overheating.

I'm sharing the following from personal experience with a B&O system with upgraded corners and sub:

  1. I could not hear a difference between FLAC and 192kbit VBR, so 320kbit will likely be overkill
  2. There is very much a point where the amount of music that you want to have with you goes beyond actual need and becomes bragging fodder
  3. There is no number 3
  4. WTF why is this still counting?
  5. OMG STOP ALREADY!
  6. AAAAAIIIIIEEEEEEE!!!

B&O is Bang and Olefsen, also known as the upgraded Maverick sound system.

As for the rest of it, I find that my 120gigs if music (12k+ songs) seems to be enough for my wide ranging tastes. You can certainly do whatever you want, technology permitting. Not sure why you thought that I might be offended.

Personally I decided that my idea of a mini web server in the truck with it's own wifi access point and 2TB drive was overkill.
