Hello all! I was wondering if anyone could give some insight. I am currently starting my look for a Maverick, and I don't have any real intention on Off-Roading, but the Off Road package started appealing to me because of the screen size and upgraded components. I did also consider the 4k towing package which I am leaning towards because of the 7 pin as I am hoping to haul a small camper with it eventually. I have been having a hard time in my area locating trucks that have either so I was wondering if the upgraded cooling fan or transmission cooler (etc.) are items that felt worth it to anyone OR does it feel like its missing from people who don't? Just trying to get opinions. This is my first Truck purchase and I want to be ready when I finally find one I want to buy.

I guess what I'm asking is if there a significant difference pulling something in the 4 pin with no upgrades (example using XLT Luxury Package) vs the 4k towing package for anyone who has experience with it?

Thanks in Advance!

Edit: I live in PA and spend most of my time in the state/this area of the coast if that helps the answer at all.

What someone might feel about it is irrelevant. The upgraded components are necessary to meet the towing/off-road/etc.. spec Ford engineers set for the truck.

You either need them, or you don't.

If you get a FX4/4K truck but never use it as intended, that's your choice, but the truck still has to meet those spec's.

In this case, better to have it and not need it, vs. need it, and not have it. ;)

But aren't they only relevant if I get that package? Like the luxury package comes with the 4 pin connector and hitch but doesn't have the upgraded fans/cooling, right? So I guess that should be added to my question, is there a significant difference pulling something in the 4 pin with no upgrades vs the 4k towing package for anyone who has experience with it?

I have the upgraded radiator, oil and transmission coolers. I did not order my Mav so all this was ordered by the original buyer who walked away. If you plan to tow something all three are a good feature to have. You will not see the benefit until you start towing. The engine and transmission will run cooler and your engine and transmission should have a extended life. I have had these features on a station wagon, and a Ford E250 van. I wish the tow package included a higher output alternator and battery. If you go to the mountains or desert southwest towing you will see your truck will run cooler than the same truck without the features. Is it worth the extra cost it will depend on how long and how many miles you drive. Food for thought. If the Mav included a oil and transmission fluid temperature gauge would be a useful tool when towing.

Thank you! This helped.

Yeah a gauge would be cool, something to think about also. Thanks again!

Also I seem to recall reading on this forum I think that a lot of trailers now days come equipped for 7 pin connectors ( you may want to check the validity of that )

personally if I knew I was going to be towing from time to time I would want to make sure the vehicle was equipped adequately to safely tow the item without causing harm to the vehicle

better safe than sorry

If you're towing 2K and under with no brakes, then the std package is fine. If you're towing over 2K and/or with brakes, you'll need the 4K option.

Remember, if you don't get the 4k tow you can only tow 2k period. I believe the 7-pin is used with trailer brakes, the 4 pin setup has no provision for trailer brakes.

My Maverick came with the 4 pin and 7 pin set up. The 2000 and 4000 lb towing pkg is a small step up in price for the flexibility you get. Remember the 4K includes your trailer, cargo and passengers. Depending on the trailer you are going to tow you could exceed the GVW pretty quick. When I was looking for mine I met with the sales man and he had a book with a detailed breakdown with what was included with the truck I wanted. Meet with the dealer and ask questions. I did and I got what i wanted. His book gives a detailed explication on options and what is in the packkk

The number you want is GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) not GVW which for the 4K is 8,145lbs. Cargo (in the truck) and passengers don't directly come out of the 4k towing limit, but they sit in the margin between the curb weight + towed weight and the GCWR. Depending on configuration that's some 400-ish lbs if the tow load is maxed.
