TL/DR: Drained my transmission on my 2.0L and came back with only about 3.5 quarts. Refill with leveling took in around 4.5 quarts. Noticed vent cap covered in presumably ATF; confused what's causing ATF vent out like that.
Yesterday I drained and refilled my ATF, PTU, and RDU like many others recommended around 30k miles. The service was actually quite easy, and if you have the tools, you should definitely do it instead of taking it to the dealer (if you want to save some $$). My local dealer quoted me almost $900! I may make a separate post on some tips and tricks I learned that I wish I knew going into the ATF change, as the process can be a little finnicky and there's not much info out there.
Both my PTU and RDU were wildly underfilled like many others have stated as well. However, I was not expecting a lower outcome for the ATF too. On most other forums and videos I've seen for the same service I've performed for the 8F35 transmission, somewhere around 4-4.5 quarts come out (which would make sense, especially for the ones who measure the drained amount and put the same amount back in with new fluid). With mine, I got around 3.5 quarts. I refilled with 5 quarts, leveled it off at operating temp, and maybe around 0.25-0.5 quarts came back out.
Although, before I started, I noticed the transmission vent cap looking like this:
Now I'm not sure the pictures do it enough justice, but the funnel and surrounding area were densely crusted in what I'm guessing is ATF fluid. Now this has me worried: Is something up with my Mav? Is the trans getting too hot, causing the ATF to vent out like that? I live in the Central Valley of California, where this year's summer temps averaged well over 100-110 for months on end on my ranch. Did anyone else encounter the same issue when they performed this too?
Either way, my truck runs fine, even before. I'm pretty glad I was able to top off the correct fluid levels so that puts me at ease. To see if this issue keeps happening, I will most likely pour half a quart or so of ATF and level it off on my next oil change and see how much comes out.
