Not going to beat you up since that's already been covered. How about a picture of the door and let us know if an adjustment will fix it or if its more involved which means more $$.

I think I can picture your incident.
Tractor trailer flying down the road, no time or room to change lanes. Heavy braking just might have got you hit by a car tailgating the big truck.

If you would have looked and seen that massive truck coming I assume you would have known to not unlatch the door until it passed. Now you know they produce a crap ton of turbulence as they pass.

Sounds like this was entirely your fault.

You said, ā€œwished we didn't have to share roads with these trucks,ā€
You’d starve without them in just a few days, maybe a week.
I spent a lot of years and miles in those trucks. Our biggest challenge was not hitting cars that do crazy things right in front of us.

Like open a door in hurricane force winds.

I’ve seen many a sprung door get unsprung by putting a small piece of a 2ā€x4ā€ in just the right place and bending the hinge support back into shape.
A good body man can fix it good as new.
Most likely.

Good Sir, the truck was the only vehicle coming down the road, it was a good 200+ yards away when i decided to jump back in the truck, it could've change lanes- as req'd by NY law, or it simply could have let off the gas and dropped 8-10mph. Truck was definitely speeding....but "it was entirely my fault". Everything so black and white in your world, like how a child thinks...
My responsibility is not waiting the 10sec for the truck to pass and perhaps still thinking I'm a spry 20yr old, instead of the middle aged man I am and therefore, a second slower than I was in my prime. There are asses in this world, that want to 'get back" and "teach lessons, not saying your one of them, but they certainly exist...and indeed, they are often times, not so rare. I do believe it was intentional.

200 yards away 70-75 mph. Yeah I hear ya, I have no idea how many seconds it took for him to close that distance. I would have guessed 3 seconds.

Especially since it was the only thing coming I would have waited the Seconds and let him blow by before I’d step down that side of my truck.

Simply for my safety I always assume other drivers will not do what they are supposed to do.

Well still, it’s a good thing he didn’t kill you.

I had an Uncle that had a lifetime working in GM factories who also restored old cars. I remember seeing him almost work miracles adjusting doors with a 2Ɨ4. Let's hope the Maverick is condusive to such an adjustment. I know being a unibody, it could be a lot different.

Documented a few times here that people who lose control of the door in the wind or maybe a kid swings the door open hard will end up breaking the welds on the door to the arm that attaches to the body and it sounds like that’s what’s happened here.

The doors going to be fixed by the end of the day, I'll update with the damages. Here's a pic and the passenger side for comparison, not that obvious unless your a car guy like myself, and i imagine, like most of us here.

So I see a mistake on your part:
What you call a shoulder most call an emergency lane - you should have just got off the next exit to adjust you cargo or better yet done so where you picked it up. Maybe the truck driver had a vehicle on his left side. Maybe you could have waited a few seconds to let a truck pass.
Sorry about your truck but you made several bad decisions so get over it.
I’m pretty sure I’m over it šŸ˜‚ I’m not crying about it, we’re all here to share stories, I’ve just shared mine. I’m not losing sleep over it buddy, I knew from the very beginning that it wasn’t the end of the world, shit happens, drive on.

Body shop called, they’re not going to even charge me- bill would’ve been $80- I need to buy a new door check, BC it now clicks and I find that annoying- it’s about $25. My family and I have done a bunch of work with these guys over the last decade, they’re great.
