Just because your buddy had a car with a bad battery, it doesn’t mean it is common. My first Prius developed a cracked head at 183k miles, that destroyed the engine. It was the plug in version and when the engine died, I drove it 10 miles to the dealership under battery power alone, doing 65 mph on the freeway, so the battery was just fine. I traded in my second Prius at 135k miles and the battery was fine. Now I’m in a 7 year old Tesla that has over 140k miles on it and the battery is fine. Sure the battery has degraded. It only holds 60 kWh of electricity now and it would hold 71 kWh when new, so 15.5% range loss. But it still charges and discharges as well as when it was new. Just like turbos, batteries typically last for more than 200k miles. You are more likely to be replacing batteries in the Hybrids Long before a turbo in the gas version. A buddy just sold his Prius that is 6 years old for that reason.
