Store your spare rims a distance away from where your truck is normally parked, I've read the truck can pick up the signals and give problems in the readout.
this is not true because the sensors go to sleep when not moving to save battery life. my summer tires are sitting about 10 from my truck in my garage and no issues.

speaking of battery life that's my guess on the OP having issues with motorcraft sensors failing quickly (they should last at least 5 years) is that they were old stock with old batteries, and my second guess if they were bought on Amazon or eBay is that they were cheap counterfeit.

You are definitely right that the sensors shut off when there is no motion detected. (Someone posted a few years ago on Maverick Truck Club that their truck was getting readings from tires stored nearby). And yes, be careful of cheap Amazon TPMS not working properly because of degrading battery issue, ask me how I know, that can be pretty frustrating.

Generally a TPMS should last 10 years or 125,000 miles. Translates that if you have 50,000 miles (not likely) on OEM tires and replace them with 70,000 mile tires you need new sensors when you replace them, maybe before they are completely worn.

OP here,

The sensors came with the rims off of a 2022 XL but they weren't installed in the rims so I guess they might not have been the ones from the 2022 xl but i doubt that. They weren't from ebay or amazon but from the fellow I got the rims from. Anyway the ones from the tire shop are working fine as is the last motorcraft one remaining in use.

I store my tires in a shed about 30 ft away from where the vehicles are parked.

Figured I would chime in as well, as someone who I think commented on this thread a couple times since it started in 2023. I'm going to be selling my 2023 when my 2025 comes in, so I already took off my nicer tires in anticipation of that happening. Was lazy and decided to see if there was any truth to the "you don't need to program your sensors, the truck will pick them up automatically" claim. I always was in the "no way that works" camp. But guess what......after using a programming tool the last 5 or 6 times I switched my tires, this time I let it ride.... And guess what? MY 2023 never threw a code or gave me any error when I put my old tires back on it. It seems to have gracefully grabbed the signals for all 4 tires immediately upon them waking up. So there ya go!
