Late replies but...
Even with my F-250, I towed a 7K trailer with a standard weight-carrying hitch most of the time. I got a cheap weight-distributing hitch as a supplement but it towed fine without it. I'd tow weight-carrying if it was windy or if I knew the freeway was very washboardy. The constant up-and-down is a great way to break a trailer tongue. Wasn't too concerned about the hitch since that thing was like...3/8" plate and 1/4" wall tube held on with 8 bolts. The trailer tongue was like 2x6x.125 wall tube.
Also the plumbing repair tape doesn't get gooey after a few heat cycles.Plumbing repair tape is pretty stretchy and works better than electrical tape.
I guess I'm pretty conservative with towing, but I'd go one further and say that, if you need a weight distributing hitch, you should probably get a different tow vehicle or a smaller trailer. WDH's are giant levers that put a ton of stress on the trailer tongue and the vehicle hitch. It's not a good idea to use a weight distribution hitch on a unibody vehicle like the Maverick.
