So I have a 2024 Ford maverick hybrid
lariat front wheel drive . I was told it would be able to be towed on a dolly. I have towed it twice now and both times lots of codes and the smell of brakes burning when I move it off the dolly, But within minutes, all the codes are gone I did check it periodically on the way down the road, nothing was abnormal.. Check all the wheels and rotors and nothing was hot . But when I do pull it off,. I smell brakes burning. for a moment and within moments all codes return back to normal👍 I’m thinking of disconnecting the negative on the battery next time before I tow it , but if I do that could I lock the doors ? anybody have any ideas ? besides flat towing it Thanks

Having done a thousand or so miles of dolly towing, the codes don't surprise me, that's almost expected, and yes they clear immediately. However the brake smell is really troubling. Are you sure it's not the dolly brakes smoking? There was a thread about this and folks thinking it was related to the truck appyling the e brake if the angle is too great. Seemed somewhat speculative.

I’ve towed a similarly equipped hybrid nearly 4k miles this summer with nary a problem . Of course the codes and warnings appear after disengaging from the dolly but disappear within 100 meters of driving. Never had a smell of overheated brakes. However I always double check to ensure the parking brake is disengaged and upon starting to move check to ensure the rear wheels are turning.

Would not disengage the battery.

I don't think that you put it into neutral-tow mode, causing the issues. The vehicle looks at the back wheels turning and thinks it is rolling away, so it puts on the brakes just like it does when sitting on a hill. This behaviour is disabled in neutral-tow mode.

First off, I didn’t think you had to put it in neutral tow On a tow dolly ? I think, for some reason, the emergency breaking is being activated and holding the brake pads and so when I back off of the dolly, there’s somewhat engaged . I do check to make sure the back wheels are moving no problem with the tow dolly . someone else stated that they don’t think it’s a good idea for all those codes to come on . I had a mini Cooper before and it did some of the same things , something to do with the safety features I think. Thanks for all the replies.

Well I never did neutral tow on tow dolly, I always thought being in park added a layer of roll off safety. As an experiment it might be interesting to see if that prevents all the codes, but I wouldn't do normally. The only thing I could think of if it really is the truck is that your 12v battery gets low.

Feel the area around your dolly wheels for heat. I dolly tow mine and the truck brakes are never engaged. I also don’t use neutral tow mode.

I do check for heat around the tow dollies wheels no problem there no problem on the back wheels of the Maverick. Are you saying that you don’t have any any lights or warnings when you pull off the tow dolly

No. I do get all of the lights, sounds and warnings when I'm done towing. As mentioned though, they go away after a short drive. Still unclear as to what's causing everything to freak out..
