New Mav owner here, I'm stocking up the truck with a small tool kit to take on the road,.
I've got the standard metric wrench and socket kit, screw drivers, etc. and the Torx+ driver bits.
What's the one tool that I'm likely to forget to pack to take care of maintenance or get me out of a jam?

Flush cutters. $3 tool that makes it a lot easier to cut off or trim zip ties than using wire cutters. Oh, and zip ties. Fuse puller, multimeter, battery terminal wrench, 6-in-1 screwdriver, lug flip socket, breaker bar, bolt/washer/nut assortment, jumper pack/air inflator/power bank combo, gloves, jacket, overpants, headlamp. Out of all the stuff I have on board, all that is what I've used in the last year or so.

Thanks. I've got almost all of that in my garage, wasn't sure what to pack in the truck and take on the road.

While I have a large garage full of some of the best tools, and I've never been sorry for buying the best tools, Harbor Freight has a great set that's compact and can usually fit behind the Maverick's rear seat and always fits under the rear seat. It makes a good base to customize and build your EDC on.

They are Harbor Freight quality, but I've found that a cheap tool beats no tool when stranded at night in the rain.

Actually on sale now for $30, probably the best inexpensive tool deal out there. I have these in my TRX, Raptor, Maverick, wife's car, etc.... Buy one and keep it in your vehicle......

And get a 1500A NOCO charger Amazon.com: NOCO Boost GB50: 1500A UltraSafe Jump Starter – 12V Lithium Battery Booster Pack, Portable Jump Box, Power Bank & Jumper Cables - for 7.0L Gas and 4.5L Diesel Engines : Automotive

Non Mav-specific, but I always liked to carry a wire coathanger... saved my ass on multiple occasions in beaters. Couple of times it was simple muffler tie up, one time used some for a hose clamp, one time an alternator lost a bolt and I had a nearly dead batt, no charging and the same belt ran the waterpump, so overheating was possible.... managed to wind a coathanger round and through the alternator to mount hole enough times to keep tension on the belt and it got me home.

In theory, with a painted or varnished coat hanger, it provides just enough of a shielding flux when burning, to stick weld, badly and blobbily with sub par metal as the filler, with your jumper cables off the battery. Some offroad types claim to have done that. Doubt it's a very secure weld, but it's a get you home weld.

Stick weld with coat hangers using your 12 volt battery and jumper cables as a whip ;)

Cheap shower curtain cut in two - incase you need to lay something dirty on back seat because bed is full - or a person got dirty with the repair. Actually I've used in front seat, because I was the one that got dirty.

Huge trash bag that tire can fit it - same reason of bed full.
Or frankly I didn't want to move the cover and reach over, backseat was easier for planned quick drop-off.

Long trip with all the luggage in bed, and a flat. Nice having tire in bag in back seat between the passengers, so I could drop off. Maybe one sat in middle actually, so tire weight didn't damage center console lid, don't recall.

If bringing tools for some serious repairs - got service manual instructions for the ones you'd be willing to tackle in interesting places?

I haven't read the fine print on the service, will they come get me if I'm 10 miles up a rough dirt road?

LOL, agreed. Ford service may come in ..handy.. but it's best go through life prepared to the extent we can.

Also better to not need to tell a bad guy " please hold right there for 15 minutes so I can call the Police"

;)

If you get the ones with magnets in the bottom you can stick them on the side of the vehicle while you are changing a tire in the rain and have a mini awning to do it under.

Also if you're fiddling under the hood and drop a screw you can roll it lengthwise and "fish" with it.

I always keep a colapsable 4way lug wrench, small can of WD-40, some lock lubricant spray, retractable ice/snow scraper, portable socket set, tire rope repair kit, flashlight, small variety of common fuses, old blanket, hand cleaner, a tire guage and a tow strap..... for everyday driving. Depending on where/when Im going, might also keep a set of snow chains too (some states require them) and a colapsable small entrenching tool.

Bring along few other tools and items when towing a trailer... especially over long distances.

Also, be sure to check spare for proper PSI, and always face it with stem down for easy fill without lowering. Emergency triangle kit is always a good thing to have as well.
