My last 3 trucks have had small rock chips. None have been repaired. None of them cracked. The middle truck was a Tacoma. I called my insurance company, State Farm. They set up an appointment at SafeLite for a free repair. I missed the appointment and didn't reschedule. I traded it in two+ years later on my current Maverick which received a rock chip 2 weeks after I bought it. That was in December 2024 and I'm still driving it with the rock chip. It's small and insignificant but I know it's there. If I were to get it repaired, I would have it done by a professional. They are more experienced than me.

Several years ago I had an El Camino with a small rock chip. I took it to a glass place. I asked if I needed a windsh1eld. He judo-chopped the chip lightly and the windshield cracked over a foot in either direction. He said "Yes, you do." He went on to explain that the interior sheet of plastic was compromised and the glass wouldn't have split otherwise. It wouldn't be safe for me to drive around with a chip repair. He figured the judo-chop test was around 50-50 for windshield replacement. My insurance paid for it.

Some auto insurance policies will cover windshield chip repairs as a no-cost no-reported-claim benefit of the coverage. They would probably rather pay out a rock chip repair than a whole new windshield if it gets to that point if the chip repair wasn't done in a timely manner.
In MA windshield coverage is standard, and to do without it, I believe you can opt out. Windshield repair would be a 100% coverage item as an incentive to repair before it spreads. They drill a tiny hole in the outer glass and fill it. However, where the repair is would be is a deciding factor. Cannot repair it is in the drivers sight of view.

Yesterday I received a small rock to the windshield that left a tiny little nick. We're talking about 4 or 5 mm at the most. It hasn't started spreading just one mark almost round in shape but very small. What is my best course of action? Can I go ahead and address the problem before it gets worse? If I take it to a place that replaces and repairs windshields are they just going to tell me that I have to wait until it gets bigger before they can do anything?
The last one I got a few years ago I was able to repair myself with one of the kits at Walmart. I could barely tell it was there afterwards. A few years later it became noticeable again so I just used one of the repair kits and again it was not really noticeable. And most importantly, it never soread. Its not difficult doing it yourself, but you can take it to a profesional do to this for no worries about it dripping while doing it on your own. From what I understand, its not terribly expensive when a proffesional does it. But definitely take care if it now before it spreads.

Yes I've heard others say the same thing about the clear nail polish. I bought the kit and used it we'll see how that goes.

Really hope it works for you, keep us up to date!
Thanks hopefully it won't spread it was such a tiny small hole that I'm not sure that the treatment from the kid I bought will really help.

Like I stated above, I’ve had great success with the Rain X brand kit…. It’s kept all four of mine from spreading
