I do admit at first I hated politics of these threads. But, since I'm starting to not give a s*** about most things I've actually enjoyed reading them. Very interesting the back and forth. I do admit I agree with one side more than the other, but I'm not going to tell you which way I lean.
It is a frustrating discussion but our country faces some real hazards and so many people do not know the facts...and any conversation helps expose the facts...Cause we sure are not going to get the truth from politicians and slanted news reports.

It is so difficult to explain the work force...I have been fortunate to travel to Asia and see the population's cost of living there is so low we cannot compete using US workers. Brother-in-law's company (largest computer hard disk company in the world) was loosing their shirt manufacturing hard disks inside the USA and competing with Chinese factories. Moved robots and assembly line to South East Asia. 100 non-skilled Asian employees ran the factory, automation did the actual manufacturing with US supervision...totally non-skilled workers. In the US (Arizona) they were having to pay health insurance, benefits, retirement, vacation time, 34%, employee taxes, etc. etc. Maybe it is cruel, not to those Asian workers, but the largest hard disk manufacturer was able to survive...and compete is a brutally competitive market.
I think that is the point - we gladly allow the exploitation of people and environment outside the US but then allow the imports of those goods saying screw you to the American worker they displaced due to enaction of laws designed to protect US workers. Those are meaningless if there are no longer any US workers left.

When you say that truck would kill here do you mean it in the sense of sales, like it would dominate sales? Or do you mean that the way it's built if people got into an accident they'd be killed because it doesn't meet our safety standards?
Look on YouTube, it's called the BYD Shark. Buyers in Texas have snuck them in. Works like a train

No will

China's BYD MOTORS will move right in when we leave. They actually have a real good truck and EVs. Already being sold in Mexico and Australia. Not allowed in US. That truck would kill here.
YES I saw the BYD's in Brazil last week I liked them!

One simple question to you all - if tariffs are so bad, then why do over 100s countries implement tariffs on Americans? Look at the long list that the White House published on the % of tariffs implemented on Americans compared to what we charge them. Is it fair? I am not going to sit here and pretend I am an economist, but I do know that just by looking at the numbers and %, we have been treated unfairly.
After WW2 and during the early Cold War, the US was the world's manufacturing and technology powerhouse. We needed (or wanted) to extend our influence to every corner of the world and I believe that these tariffs were tolerated to economically benefit countries that helped us out with military bases, intelligence, etc.

Gradually, our manufacturing went overseas. Our allies stopped spending on defense because the big, bad USA was there to help. Much of the world is now on par with the US economically and yet the tariffs remain.

Like a frog in a pot or a person in an abusive relationship, you don't notice if it happens gradually.

It's not a screw you American workers, but it is survival. We all go to Walmart, Amazon, etc to buy the Chinese made cheaper products. To survive you have to compete by pursing lower labor costs, or let China win.

In the Maverick's case (Ford) has to have a factory in Mexico in order to sell vehicles in Mexico/South America. The NAFTA Treaty was signed by the US government 20 years ago...so we can sell Ford products in Mexico only if we have a factory there. Ford is caught in the middle...but spent $1.2 billion putting up a factory there 6 years ago....now may have to close that investment. Ford got kicked in the chin, following the US's NAFTA Treaty that the US President abandoned last year...then Ford has tariffs added to their products.

He's trolling. Or maybe not. Look at where they are from. TDS runs rampant there.

Bottom line, the truth is he is an American Citizen, with a TS security clearance, working at the behest of the executive branch, and extension, the American people. Over 50% (popular vote) voted for this. This is not new or a surprise.

We are at the brink of going bankrupt with $36+ Trillion in debt. The past is past. Both parties contributed to the debt. However, now, we finally have an administration willing to take drastic measures in an attempt to tackle this crisis. If it doesn't work, then we find other solutions. We just can't go back to how the past 4 years was ran. And we must support the current administration and hope it succeeds. For everyone's sake.

According to the congressional budget office, the 2025 deficit will be $1.6 trillion, compared to $1.7 trillion in 2024.

DOGE is doing essentially nothing to solve the deficit crisis. The largest expenditure is social security and Medicare at $1.46 trillion and $882 billion, respectively. And you can’t cut that. That is a multi-generational social contract that the government has made with the American public: You pay us payroll taxes while you’re working and we give you a pension and healthcare when you retire. And American workers paid $1.71 trillion in payroll taxes last year. We pay more in than what we are getting back out! Next up is the military at $874 billion. And no one is going to cut that. Then there’s the interest on the debt at $882 billion. We can’t cut that without going into debt default, which would cause an economic depression worse than the Great Depression.

What else is DOGE going to cut? Veterans affairs at $325 billion? That’s another political 3rd rail that has to be avoided.

When you start cutting education, $268 billion, science and research, $145 billion, food stamps, $95 billion, housing assistance, $67 billion or the FDA, $6.9 billion, there’s not enough spending in those areas for the cuts to make any real difference in the deficit.

The solution to the crisis includes these budget cuts, plus repealing the 2017 tax cuts for corporations and the ultra wealthy.

We need to start being fiscally responsible. We are not currently doing that, even in 2025.

We have data of Trump's first term where tariffs invigorated the steel/material industry, created thousands of jobs, and was part of the reason our economy was flourishing with historically low interest rates across the board. Then... COVID happened.

I, along with many of you on here, flourished during his first 3 years. My 2nd home was attainable then financially, but compared to now, absolutely not.

Regarding Tariffs proven to have caused recessions and economic downfalls. One simple question to you all - if tariffs are so bad, then why do over 100s countries implement tariffs on Americans? I am not going to sit here and pretend I am an economist, but I do know that just by looking at the numbers and %, we have been treated unfairly.

For the many who do not agree, please provide some insights on how we solve our current economic problems. Are you telling me we should revert back to what the previous administration did, just continue on and hope things get ironed out?
Having been born and raised in the Bay Area of CA over 40 years ago. First generation American Citizen. I knew what the Democratic Party stood for back then. Boy, has the party gone extreme. I did not leave the Democratic party., The Democratic party left me. CA has turned to $h!*, is broke, and don't get me started on immigration, and I come from a family of immigrants.

What did I read earlier - "Brainwashed" and "Daddy syndrome" or whatever... Okay kid, like my personal experience with your party hasn't guided me to where I lean now.

To everyone on here. This thread is a perfect example of how divisive one side gets. And it is easy to see which side it is.

What matters is this. The US stock market is worth $32 trillion. And investors have lost more than $5 trillion since Trump took office, primarily because of all of the saber rattling over tariffs. You may think that tariffs are a good thing, just like Trump thinks they are a good thing, but the investors and economists do not.

When the stock market tanks, consumers stop spending, and the GDP goes down.

We are on the cusp of an economic recession. My bet is that Trump backs down on all these new tariffs before we end up in a new ‘Great Depression.’

The vast majority of the Economists have written article after article that the following is TRUE!

"DOGE is doing essentially nothing to solve the deficit crisis" ....but is actually increasing it.

Near total agreement that DOGE has already increased the national deficit. Due to 150,00++ people being laid off, early retirement, fired, and unemployed. Greatly reducing the Taxable Income of workers. Those retiring or fired will probably not be eligible for unemployment since they elected to retire (Quit).

Ignorance.........and stupidity.
