just reverse the steps you did to put it on..?

pull the little clips locking the piston on, pull off the piston, unscrew the brackets and remove the assist plates (which is kinda optional cause it will still open and close with them attached, and if you want to put the piston back on they're already there).

The pictures actually show the correct mounting. Mounting this way allows the seal oil in the cylinder to remain on the the piston seal when in the closed position, which is 99% of the time.

Assuming that someone puts the tailgate assist on upside down....How do you get it back off?

Asking for a friend.............:crackup::crackup:
I’m not sure there is a ‘right’ way to put the piston. If it works, your friend did it correctly.

To remove the strut you'll take a flat head screwdriver near the mounting point where there are two on the strut and release the clip which will allow you to pop off the strut. Then push the clip back in place once you have it removed and snap the strut back onto the ball mounts.

Maybe I shouldn't be laughing as I haven't installed mine yet.

The only thing is if it develops a leak it will drain out. The other way the oil will stay inside if the seal goes bad.

The amount of oil is less than a drop or 2. It is better to install piston down for longer life. Either way, if the seal fails it will need to be replaced. It will just last longer lubricated. The actual dampening of the strut is nitrogen gas, not liquid.

In order for their name to be read.
Rough Country is the only reseller I have seen advertising the damper with the piston in the up position.

And depending on the design of the seal structure that would be correct. Suspa has struts/springs with special seals for piston up installation. I’m sure other mfgs do also.

Maybe I should expand:
Both of the mounting plates were installed. The device was installed on the tailgate mount with the piston up. Couldn't get the device clipped on to the upper mount. That's why "my friend" thought that it was installed upside down.
