Hi everybody! I appreciate this website because I have learned a lot from it! I ordered in June 2021 and received my XLT Hybrid in late February. I am still learning and figuring things out. I love the truck overall, and my friends with the big 4WD pickups are asking me things a lot, like they are thinking that they don't need to spend $80 a week in gas back and forth to work. Maybe I can convert them.... we'll see! As a former owner of 3 Ford pickups, I never thought I could go back, thanks to the gas prices and MPG ratings. My last truck before the Maverick was a 1997 F-150 with a 6 cylinder 5-speed. I looked high and low for that truck, thinking it would give me better mileage than the V-8 automatic. Kept it until 2015, and never thought I could go back. The Hybrid Maverick is a game changer for those of us who want the utility of a truck, the ease of parking of a car, something that doesn't bankrupt me when I fill it up, and it fits into the garage next to my wife's minivan!
When I ordered, it was truly a leap of faith. I had never driven a hybrid ANYTHING. But I trusted Ford after my previous trucks, to at least make a product that I could live with. Lucky for me, I was right!
Here are a few things I didn't know and no one told me until I drove the truck home.
Contrary to what I was told by Ford in a customer chat, not all trim levels come with a pushbutton start. I was hoping for this, but as time went by during my wait, I saw that it was not true. As it turns out. it is not a deal breaker. I'd still like it..... maybe someday.
The rotary shifter knob is effective, but doesn't have the natural feel of any other shifter, and it way too similar in size and tactile feel (and general location) to the A/C fan switch. I've caught myself almost hitting other vehicles after shifting to reverse, then realizing I had changed the fan speed instead. Oops! There should be much more tactile feel in the gearshift than the fan switch. I hope I never have that accident I'm afraid of because of this design. Yes, I know... I should always look! Never had to do that in any other vehicle. Maybe I'll get used to it.
I was pretty excited when I heard about the FITS system. I have to agree, it's pretty cool, but there is only one(1) FITS receiver in the cabin proper. So you can pick your favorite accessory, but you have to take it out to do anything else. For example, I like the extra cup holders, but I need the trash can more often. So trash can wins most of the time.
Speaking of cup holders, the huge hype over the interior door panels being designed to hold (gasp!) a water bottle...... really? It doesn't hold all sizes of bottles, as a read through this forum will tell you. At least one door, preferably both front doors, should have storage pockets for flashlight, pencil/pens, umbrells, .... you know, all the stuff that was in your LAST car's door pockets. Carry all the water bottles you want in the rear doors. My opinion, no offense to those who love it.
When I ordered Co-Pilot360, after reading the descriptions, I thought I was buying adaptive cruise control. Sad to say, not on the plain XLT. Regular cruise works fine, but I was expecting ACC. I think you have to order the LUX package or go up to the Lariet trim to get ACC.
To use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you must have a wire connecting the phone to the truck. (serial port) As someone just coming from my last 2 vehicles having a CD player, this seems rather stone-age. I don't want to use data for everything I want to listen to, so I am forced to rip my CD collection onto USB drives and plug that drive into the truck. Oh well, it's a workaround and it does work, but I am not thrilled. The sound system does sound pretty good for average use.
After that, I am still thrilled to have the Maverick and I do love it! If you can tell me something I missed or am wrong about, please enlighten me! For those of you waiting to get your Mav .... hang in there! It's worth the wait! See ya!
