To me they are what I call a vestigial feature.

In the past a large portion of pickups were single cabs, and you could open them up so the air coming in your cracked front windows had a exit spot, but with long crew cabs you can accomplish the same with the rear windows. Either way, once underway you are going to want to usually close them again when going on the highway, but with a manual one you can't just reach behind you to do that if its a crew cab.

It also used to be somewhat common to have people in the bed of your truck, so having a back window was great to pass things through and communicate, but safety culture has changed and its pretty discouraged (and in many places illegal) to have folks back there.

The port itself is not flush with a hard tonneau or particularly large to use as a passthrough for long objects into the cab. Now if it were like the Toyota which drops the whole rear glass like a window, that one can be a pass through and is cool, but no such luck.

My preference is not to have it and to keep the rear headrests stored under the seat when not in use to improve rear visibility.

Wasn't there a manufacturer (Subaru ??) that put 2 bucket seats in their bed of little pick up. Bet that won't pass crash test!

Yup! The Brat. It was really just as a way to get around the chicken tax (would have added 25% to the price), it was understood you'd likely rip those out upon delivery of the vehicle. Government understood that too, which is why that loophole was closed. I think Mercedes was doing something similar until recently, importing cargo vans with some crappy seats in them that were to be removed by the dealership to avoid import taxes by making it a passenger van later modified technically.

I got it partly for nostalgia, partly for dogs, partly for baby. I used to have one in my old Chevy S-10, so I ordered the manual slider for the XLT. Then I forgot that I can't easily open it from the driver's seat if I wanted. But then I remembered I'd rather have my dogs stick their noses out that versus the back windows. And I could open it so my son can look out the window from his rear facing car seat.

I'm thinking of taking it off after reading this thread since there are some good points brought up. I like having full rear windshield visibility, and the rear windows work just as well as a slider. Maybe if I don't get scheduled next week.

Yes, get in the back seat, unlatch the window and slide it open in this new truck.
glad I have no physical limitations to open/close rear window by getting in back seat. Sorry for all of you that find this physically taxing.

I was torn whether or not I should order one. I decided to get it and see how it goes.

Went to the dealer and sat in a Ranger with a rear sliding window and didn't think the visibility was too bad.

If I need air in the cab when it is locked and hot outside it might be nice to keep the rear window door open.

I kept mine as well. I like having more options even if it’s small. I just gotta remember to close it whenever I leave the car.

You mentioned baby in the October post, so I wanted to share my work around. I have two little ladies aged 6 and 5. I also have an XLT with the manual window. When I want the rear window open, I use the voice command “ladies, open the window.” This is usually treated with an acknowledgement of “yeaaaa windy.” Closing is just as simple. Although I have to admit it sometimes just opens without the voice command. 🤔

I have had trucks with and without the sliding window, powered and not powered. Good for hauling long items. Ford should include a powered sliding window with the moonroof option. That lets the air flow nicely. The non powered siding window may be good as a camping pass through?

You don't need luxury package for the power slider, its standard on the Lariat... sadly.

I have one on my Ram, and IMO even with power they are pretty useless on a crew cab truck where you have back windows. They block some vision, can become a source of rattles, squeaks, or leaks, can let in more noise, and make tinting more of a pain. Worse though are the manual ones which are even more obstructive and less useful since you'd almost never climb back there to open it.

Its one of my gripes with the Lariat is that you are forced to get the rear window port.
They are not useless. Crack it a bit and it stops the buffeting when all windows are rolled down. That's the reason I opted for it.

Yes, I've had the on several trucks and barely use them. Woulnd NOT have ordered if it wasn't part of pkg.

I forgot to close the one on my f150 the other day when I went into Harbor freight and I can.e out to find my little dog heading across the street to try and find me. I felt terrible that I forgot to close it and he could have got hit by a car or lost.

I did not order one in the XLT. If it was power for $155 I probably would have. If it had a bumper car cab (no rear seat) and I could reach it to open and close it, I would do the manual. I took a ride from Bar Harbor, Maine to my first pit stop with one of those frigging wind noise makers opened. AHHHHHHRRRRGGGGG! I can live with opening the passenger rear glass a speck to eliminate buffering, with the window switch at my left hand.

I don't love sunroofs either. When I do drive a car with them (I have owned two), I close the shade. It is just a matter of preference. I guess that is why vehicles come in different colors.

The little window looks nice from the outside though, doesn't it?
