Wasn't there a manufacturer (Subaru ??) that put 2 bucket seats in their bed of little pick up. Bet that won't pass crash test!To me they are what I call a vestigial feature.
In the past a large portion of pickups were single cabs, and you could open them up so the air coming in your cracked front windows had a exit spot, but with long crew cabs you can accomplish the same with the rear windows. Either way, once underway you are going to want to usually close them again when going on the highway, but with a manual one you can't just reach behind you to do that if its a crew cab.
It also used to be somewhat common to have people in the bed of your truck, so having a back window was great to pass things through and communicate, but safety culture has changed and its pretty discouraged (and in many places illegal) to have folks back there.
The port itself is not flush with a hard tonneau or particularly large to use as a passthrough for long objects into the cab. Now if it were like the Toyota which drops the whole rear glass like a window, that one can be a pass through and is cool, but no such luck.
My preference is not to have it and to keep the rear headrests stored under the seat when not in use to improve rear visibility.
