Hi folks,
I searched but am a novice and probably missed the answer to my question:

Can a maverick hybrid be shifted into reverse or park while the vehicle is moving forward? For instance, by accidental turning of the shift selector.

I tried RTFM and didn’t catch it there either.

Thanks!

Thanks for the speedy response 👍
Hypothetically, if it did happen, would there be any permanent damage? Also, is there no resistance or blockage to the selector getting into the reverse or park position?

It wasn't a pleasant sensation.
I agree there should be some type of resistance or blockage to the selector getting into the park position.
I prefer a gear shift to a knob.

I actually did this in a 2015 Chevy Volt. I tried to shift to Neutral to coast but accidentally ended up in Reverse. The car was smart enough to recognize I was going 45MPH and displayed a message on the screen. I quickly shifted back, and there was no jolt or transmission drop like you would expect from a regular transmission. These vehicles are "drive by wire" and should be smart enough to handle such situations. Needless to say, it scared the crap out of me, but it did no damage and just displayed a message about stopping first. I don't recall the exact message since my intention was not to go to Reverse. This happened in a 2015 Volt, and while I haven't tried it in the Maverick and don't intend to, I would hope the same thing happens. Based on @Glen Baker LLC response, I am curious to know what actually happened, other than the obvious advice of not doing it.

Have you ever had a car that didn’t go into park if you were still rolling, or grind the gears if you put it in reverse while still moving 😉

I was coming to park and turned the dial a little quickly. It flashed a warning and stopped with a delay. I think the mav has protections thanks to a suggester rather than a pure shifter. I say suggester because it appears if you tell it to do something it thinks about it first. Which good/bad i guess. But I dont think it'll break itself unlike an older car that if you shifted would go "ok reverse? I dont even care we're moving!"

I mean..dont TRY it but this is all in theory

Makes sense. Perhaps a Ford rep will comment.

The rotary knob is in a position that’s vulnerable to accidental movement such as a passenger dinking with it, placing their hand on it when reaching for a dropped French fry etc.

The parking pawl will engage
if the hybrid Mavericks gear selector is accidentally put into park, while slowly rolling backward in neutral or reverse. The truck will jerk to a stop
I have no idea about forward.

I like to back into parking spots, that being said I got spin happy one morning and was rolling forward granted only a couple mph but threw it in park instead of reverse. Truck come to a complete stop and rocked back and forth a few times, startled me for a second but ever since then I’ve made a pretty conscious effort to look down while spinning the dial now lol

Great description.
It does that in reverse too. It goes right to the parking pawl.

I have (accidentally) done this while driving around 70 mph. It will skip over Reverse to Park, but it will actually stay in Neutral until speed is low enough to force a stop. At around 3mph it should slam on the brakes and engage the parking pawl, just like if you open the door while actively reversing.

A realistic chain of events goes like this: You or your passenger bumps the shifter while taking a cup out of the cupholder, you start slowing down, you're confused for a couple seconds, you see the engine is revving when you push the accelerator, you see "P" is selected, you shift back into Drive and carry on with your day.

I’ll keep calm and carry on! Thanks for the detailed account. 👍
