It's looks to me to be the plastic bumper. It won't rust. Order touchup paint from ford. Might be handy to have around anyway. Polish out what you can with something that is more than wax (rubbing compound I think they call it). What is left use the touchup paint on after wiping it with Acetone. After a week or so buff it again. If it looks like crap, and you can't stand it, then go pay the big bucks and have it professionally fixed. You will probably have more after 3-5 years if you use it like a truck.
This is correct. Only the black plastic bumper is exposed. Even so, this is beyond what can be fixed with touchup paint. Only a body shop will be able to make it look like new again. That being said, plastic bumpers and metal fenders seldom match exactly due to the very nature of plastic vs metal and the processes used to paint each one. It depends on the base color as to how good a match you can get. While I might tackle a job like this, if you don’t feel at all comfortable in what you are doing then a body shop is the only choice. They’ll be able to blend the panel colors the best.

I wonder if I should get a ceramic coating while I'm at it so something like this doesn't happen again? I mean it's expensive, but if it protects the paint, especially with a lifetime warranty, it could be worth the additional $1000. It should at least bring the scratch resistance in line with Gorilla Glass on a smartphone, which would have survived scraping against wood. It may also eliminate the need for a bed liner.

Ceramic coating isn't going to protect against THAT

I guess I found my answer to whether ceramic coating would have prevented something like this. The answer seems to be no.

And with paint protection film costing between $2000-$7000, you'd have a difficult time breaking even as you'd need to repaint your truck 3-12 times to make up the difference. And I can't image PPF could even take that kind of breaking even level torture to begin with.

So basically, probably best to repaint it and leave it unprotected, this kind of event is pretty rare anyways.

so if you really want it to be unseen, then yes it needs to professionally done (may only be a few hundred bucks?). that being said you stated was your 1st car, so it may happen again (sad to say :cautious:) and could be costly for insurance to be involved... if you wanted to get some touch up paint or paint pen to match then lightly wet sand with 1500+ sandpaper and hand rub/polish to good smooth surface should be cheap and learning experience that you may get better with as time goes on.

This is my first vehicle which I've had for about a month now and I pulled out incorrectly and scratched up my paint on a wood railing. It was mostly bumper, but it did expose a smaill amount of metal right at the border.

Should I get it fixed? How much will it cost? Will it rust if I don't fix it? If so, can it wait for a few months until winter is over?

Also, how should I get it fixed? Should it just need a buff and some touch up paint, or does it need a full repaint job?

You'd be surprised what film will withstand. Customer hit side of garage, I was able to clean that mess off the film without replacing it. It did leave a tiny scratch you can see near the towel.

The PPF is Suntek, it only suffered that little scratch and did not need replaced.

That’s pretty impressive. Maybe I need to reresearch the ppf vs ceramic argument again before I take delivery.

After working and running a dealer body shop for more years than your probably alive and looking at the photo I would say 60/70 percent can be buffed to look better by a pro, obviously bare metal will need touch up and will be noticeable but it's on the edge and can be touched up OK. take if to a reputable repair shop, I would charge someone I didn't know 50/60 bucks for that or do it for free to make a customer, get touch up paint first from Ford if they have to mix a color it could cost more. IT by no means is going to be prefect it will look much better. If you don't like it, have it fixed properly by a pro, theres no blending, color is applied to repaired area then the COMPLETE panels have to be cleared NOT BLENDED.
There is no coating in the world that is going to help you if you hit a wall.

Concrete parking deck wall collision. This time the film was destroyed but not the paint on the bumper.

Since it’s on the bumper it will not rust. It will need to be sanded and repainted. Cost around 300 to 500 dollars.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'll probably do what WJOHNM said, since while the scratch is deep, it's not too noticable at a reasonable distance, meaning the touchup paint should be fine if done properly. I'm quite lucky that the bumper took the vast majority of the hit, with only a tiny bit of exposed metal. All vehicles get battle scars after all, especially trucks.

I believe the bumper cover is plastic...so no rust issues there....clean the area good and use some light polishing compound to hand buff out the scratches...
Touch up the rest and wait till summer to get repaired when the paint will be more available.
