This morning I was driving on high way 364 between highway 141 and Upper Bottom Road (Eastbound St. Charles, Mo) at 9AM and I was passed by a Cactus Green Maverick with a roof rack of some kind and what appeared to be tie down cleats on top of the bed. The tail gate did not have the Maverick stamp, two ford ovals on on the top of the tailgate and a smaller ford oval where the Maverick stamp would go. It did not have the badge by thr door with the model level. It was not a ranger because there was not a break between the cab and the bed. Has anyone else seen this anomaly. Good Hunting

So the Explorer is a unibody now. I do not believe the one I owned in the 90’s was. That is what I saw. Thanks

Nah, those old ones were still BOF (Sport Trac was 2001-2010). There is a bed gap, even, but as that picture kind of illustrates it can blend in with the rear doorline in some lighting/angles and the continuous rocker molding hides it further.

that's back in the day when the Explorer and Ranger were first cousins.

Ah, yes, the Explorer Sport Trac. I can see why you might have been confused. It does look a little like the Escape Sport Truck...

Easily confused. I always look for the off-center rear license plate. Dead give-away.

I've found the easiest way to spot a Maverick from behind at a distance is the off-center license plate. It is literally the ONLY truck on the roads in the US like this.
For sure, license plate is the easiest way to spot a Mav from behind. I've been almost fooled a number of times until I looked for the plate.
Oncoming, the headlamps are unique enough to help it to stand out.

I also agree about the oncoming headlights, although, IDK about you, but for me, there are a few certain model GMCs and Jeep headlights that always fool me at a distance, and if I remember right, the newer model explorer has extremely similar headlights to the Maverick.

For sure. The more models that start to use daytime LEDs, and use a similar design makes it a lot harder to distinguish. When the 2024 Rangers start hitting the road, it'll be very difficult!
