Excerpt from a SAE Engineering magazine (Dated May 2022):

Range between fill-ups
(or charges) is a major selling point for
hybrids. They are vastly superior to
even the priciest EVs in this metric.
Ford’s new $21,000 Maverick hybrid
can deliver over 500 miles of driving
range, beating Cadillac’s $59,000 Lyriq
EV and Tesla’s $40,000 Model Y each
by about 200 miles. There’s also the
benefit of having a “heat engine” for
complete cabin warming, regardless of
ambient temperature and duty cycle.
Hybrids ultimately may only be a
“bridge” to an all-EV future, but OEMs
who have fully committed to EVs in the
short term may end up regretting their
decisions. While traditional ICEs are
heading for a sundown, hybridized
combustion engines will power perhaps
one third of new vehicles for at
least the next decade, and millions beyond
it. “Let’s just say that by [2030],
it’s a 50/50 mix of ICE and BEV,” Dave
Filipe, VP of hardware modules at
Ford, postulated to the SAE WCX audience.
“But that 50-percent ICE is going
to be heavily influenced by the hybrids.”
And Ford will have more of
them, he noted.

My thoughts exactly. The enthusiasm behind EV's is similar IMO to what Allen Greenspan said about the stock market... irrational exuberance.

I would consider an EV or PHEV if they were affordable but they aren't. We all know how expensive things have become lately. Nothing is a bargain but the Maverick comes as close to reasonable as anything out there.
Range is important. Spot on about Hybrids.

I've often thought about our national power grid, national disasters and electric cars. If your in a remote mountain area that's under threat of burning to the ground or trying to flee a coastal area that is under threat of major storm flooding and stuck in stop and go traffic... how long is that battery going to last? Did you even have a full charge before you left? Were you able to even charge it? Then there is winter in the north with its extremely cold temperatures and the occasional blizzard.

Hybrids are superior.

We own 2 pure EV cars and a hybrid Maverick. Guess what we take on road trips -yup! In 5 years, when there's more charging station infrastructure, the decision may be different.
But also, the hybrid feels to me like it makes the most efficient use of both the petroleum products and the rare earth materials used for vehicle propulsion.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles should have been the future, they are superior to everything else in every respect.

The powers that be made sure that never happened.

The EV push is a planned failure designed to eradicate all personal transportation. 15 minute cities anyone?

Doesn't matter in several states because it will be required 100% BEV in a few years for new vehicles. Jeep just announced because of the new laws they will only sell Wrangler 4xe models in 14 states.

Hydrogen has the problems of needing a whole new distribution system and a new generation system that doesn't exist to scale at this time.

I like that hydrogen (H2) is stored in tanks vs electricity that has to be stored in heavy, expensive and difficult to recycle batteries.

Hydrogen can be distributed much the same way as conventional fuels. There are about 60 hydrogen filling stations on CA, I think a lot of them are just an extra pump at a gas station.

Currently hydrogen costs about $16 per gallon but is over twice as energy dense a gasoline so it is the equivalent to about $6 gas.

There are many ways to produce hydrogen, currently most hydrogen is made from fossil fuels – not exactly ‘green’ but hydrogen made by electrolysis using surplus wind, solar and nuclear energy is promising.

Storing high pressure liquid hydrogen is a challenge, large cylindrical tanks will work for trucks but are difficult to package in a compact car. However there is a company that claims that it can make ‘square’ hydrogen containers that are ‘drop in’ replacements for battery packs!

Of course you still have to make the fuel cells but they don’t use ‘rare earth’ materials and are simpler to manufacture than batteries.
