My 2024 hybrid has 18K miles. Recently, with cooler weather, I've noticed that the truck's gas engine runs upon starting, making quite a racket. My house is on a hill, and when leaving home I'm almost always headed downhill. The temp gauge stays on "C" for 20 or more minutes until I start going uphill. Then the gauge moves to the enter point and the heater begins working. This doesn't sound to me like a thermostat issue. I had the high-voltage radiator and grill shutters replaced last summer after an accident. I'm wondering if the shutters aren't working. Any thoughts our there in Maverick Land? Thanks.

On cold mornings I can look out my window and see the radiator shutters closed.
I start Pepper with my Key Fob from inside my warm house and let her warm up while I finish my coffee in front of the fireplace. Ten, Fifteen minutes later I look out and the louvers are about half open.

A mile down my two lane I get on my four lane at the stop sign.
A few times when new I’d get out and see If the louvers fully opened. I don’t bother anymore because my temp gage is up to at least three bars by then.
Full operational temp is four bars. I get to that a bit faster with a winter warm up trick.

I run full synthetic. I take it easy peasy til I’m fully warmed up. On a 27 degree morning that takes a fifteen minute warm up to get me to the second bar and two miles of easy driving to get to four bars IF !

After my initial warm up I drive gently in sport mode.
Sport mode holds me about 2200 Rpm instead of Normal mode that holds me at about 1600. Again I am taking it easy peasy until I see that fourth bar.

Op, Get out and look before you take it in.

Cooler but not cold.
Shutters open is normal.
About's 38 and below - 46% closed.
Some lower temp I've not noted the value at yet - should be more % closed.

If you have the HVAC on for heat - yes ICE starts when you start the hybrid.
That noise may also be the Generator Motor spinning making a racket - takes a while for the tranny to warmup - much slow than the DCDC Convertor which is on a coolant loop.
Even slower than the HVB on that downhill recharge you're giving it.

You should have heat well before the center of the gauge though.
Right above the bottom line of the gauge - which is 120 F, you get some wimpy heat - upwards of the bottom upper line - 156 F, should be very decent heat.
That wouldn't have anything to do with the shutters.

Where are the louvers that are mentioned in these posts?

I just learned that "Active Grill Shutters" exist and my Maverick has them. :inlove: Brilliant!
