Batteries have come down so much in price that the cost difference between a hybrid battery and a smaller PHEV battery is only a few hundred dollars.

A hybrid already has 99% of the parts to be a PHEV, companies that really jack up the PHEV price either are doing a cash grab or are sticking in an excessively large battery for a PHEV .
The average per kWh cost of an automotive lithium battery is ~$151. So for a Maverick's 1.1 kWh to Escape 14.4 kWH that's some $2,000. Plus the extra wiring, hardware, and control components for negotiating with the chargers.

yeah doesn’t work that way, there is a conflation of different cell types in that metric.

if your going raw materials a Bev battery is $116 kwhr (with overseas LifePO4 half that already)

“power” batteries cost much more per kwhr and the controls and wiring is similar between the 2. Armor and packing is generally much more expensive on a “power” battery and is the vast majority of the cost in that case

the “China price” for an HV battery charger is ~$85 depending on speed (I bought one for hobby use)

The real cost difference between a plain hybrid and a reasonable PHEV (12kwhr or less battery) is increasingly moving towards parity.

First off... Love love love our Lux Lariat Hybrid. Ok, I say "our" it is hers, which was not the original plan... Wifes 2019 Lexus RX350 was sent down the road. I never imagined she would trade the Lexus for the Maverick. The Maverick was to be my work truck! (The Lexus RX350 is a great SUV, highly recommend btw... ) Where I am going with this is: if the rumors are true (assorted relible web sites w/pics suggest they are) and Ford is working on a AWD PHEV Maverick... The day it is available to order I will be all over that and we will be a two Maverick household.
I don't know about two in the same family. I added a full BEV ( bullet proof Kia EV6 GT Line) to my Mav Lariat in the garage. Find that that combo gives me the best of both worlds. Having a 350 mile ( in town, 290 at 75 mph on the road) BEV gives me everything l need around town for more than a week b4 a charge and the Mav gives me a long rider ( took it Xcountry right out of the dealer box) and for "truck" stuff. Best of both worlds. Happy camper, lol.
