My Maverick has been exhibiting a rough idle condition for about two months. When idling at a stop, you can hear the engine rev hunting. At infrequent cadences, it also feels like the truck is "bucking" forward - a noticeable bounce, as if someone gently rear-ended you, or you were sitting on a bridge and could feel it bouncing. If one's foot isn't firmly on the brake, the truck will also try to pull forward gently. It feels like a misfire, but the truck isn't throwing any error codes.

My local Ford dealer has been absolutely unhelpful and unwilling to take this seriously or do anything about it. When I scheduled a service appointment for it, they told me they observed the issue and "called ford about it" and that "Ford engineers said it was fine" yet wrote it down as "could not replicate" on the paperwork, so something doesn't add up.

I believe this behavior began around November when the dealer performed the BCM update 23E09.

Has anyone experienced something similar? I've owned many vehicles and this is something that would have concerned me and sent me to my mechanic on any of them. My dealer's suggestion to just ignore it does not work for me. It does not seem like a minor issue. I'm worried about getting kicked around until the warranty runs out and then getting stuck with an expensive repair.

Has anyone experienced this same problem, and if so, have you been able to come to a resolution under warranty working with dealer service? Any magic words I should say, or avenues I should ask them to pursue?

I've felt the same thing, and I've noticed that it only happens when the ICE is running and I'm stopped. Probably some torque is bleeding through to the wheels instead of only to the regen motor.

I still get it when the ICE is cold. No pun intended. Once it warms up, it goes away. Mavs just love to dance!

Hi there! I can look into your Maverick's concern on my end. To get started, could you please send a private message over with the name/location of your local Ford dealer and your Maverick's VIN?

I had the same thing happen to me this morning. I had never noticed it before and it definitely made me concerned. I use the autohold on the brake, and it felt like it was going to lurch me into traffic. This was also with a cold engine as the other posters mentioned.

Surging on the hybrid while switching between hybrid and ICE is a long known issue that Ford has yet to address. It also likes to happen while sitting idle with the ICE running.

Same feeling here but so far only at start up and traveling a short distance . . . maybe 100 feet.

You are not alone.
There have been reports of this for as long as the Maverick has been on the streets.

I've driven 5 different hybrids. This is the newest AND least refined of any.
(and not the cheapest; but the second cheapest)

This was my least expensive hybrid.

I have the same issue. Had it at the dealer today for the turn signal recall and mentioned this as well. Dealer applied satisfaction program 23P18. No apparent difference.

Yep. Happens maybe once every 10 or so trips taking my kids to school in the morning. Always tends to happen at a red-light that is 2 miles from my house (and between the light and my house is all 35 mph back-country road where I am about 70% on electric). Almost seems to be temperature related since tends to happen on colder days (under 40 degress). Just started happening around early July when the temps in Texas started to dip.

Both of our 23 and 22 Hybrids have the "rough idle" thing. It's more noticeable with the heat cranked up and it being cold outside. At first it was alarming, now I just shrug it off. People have said the engine mounts are big/rubber to allow this to happen.

I have a late 23 and have the same issue occasionally. Intermittent problems are the hardest to diagnose. I'm planning on ignoring it till it happens more often, making it easier to find, or until near the end of the warranty for the engine/transmission.

I just started noticing this after having at the dealership for a brake booster change and a few recalls. I also had it in for a drivers side cv axle and on my way to work that day the passenger side cv axle went bad. Truck was great until I hit 17,000 miles now I’m selling as soon as I get back from second cv axle repair.

Is there any difference when you toggle auto-hold off/on?

As for dealers, if you don't trust the one you're using, go to another one. For warranty work you do not have to use the service department of the dealer you bought the truck from.
