Does anyone know the correct way to remove the black trim strips from the roof?

Why? Are you planning on adding something else to the roof channel?
I'm thinking of replacing the trim with L-Track. Bars are a clunky thing to have on the roof, full time. I installed T-slot tracks on my old van and I could attach almost anything to those and still have no real resistance when they were not in use.

That's not really a disappointment. I get tired of small specialty fixtures and fasteners that age poorly. I've designed a load of specialty fasteners in my industry and always thought that wherever they are used, the manufacturer should stamp a lifetime date on the product.

There's a video online where a guy goes through how it's done. It involves removal of the headliner to access the fasteners from inside.
Following this post because I'd like to do the same thing. I saw another post where they attempted to do this, but ran into a bolt in a channel that was difficult so they went with a different option. If someone can link to that video I'd like to watch it....because I'm not one to always do things the easy way.

JCR Offroad goes through it very nicely:

Perfect, It looks like the most difficult part is getting the headliner out of the way to get to the bolts...as I suspected.
