I ran over one of my key fobs last week (long story), and the fob is broken, however I still have the “key” part that goes in the ignition. I am unable to start the car with the error” “no key detected” as the chip in the FOB is damaged.

how would I do about getting a new replacement fob that is PROGRAMMED? I’m assuming I can reuse the actual key and attach it to the new fob? Also looking to make a cheap 3rd key to hide somewhere in case something like this happens again.

trying to avoid the dealership?

tdlr- broke fob, now have one working fob and two physical keys. Want a second working fob

sometimes you can buy the physical key on amazon or carandtruckremotes.com but you usually have to get it programed from a local locksmith as previous post stated

he mentions having to have 2 key fobs, so don't know, you may be forced to go to a ford dealer

After watching the fob discussions for a while these are "rules" as I understand them: If you have two working fobs, you can program the fob yourself and get the key cut where available. And you can have only four total fobs in the truck's computer. So, if you go to the dealer for a fob or programming have them erase the broken fob info, taking you back to two. After you have two working fobs, program the third yourself. Redneck Garage is an excellent source for more info. You will find different self-programming methods posted on the forum. I will let you search for them; I need my nap.

Yeah unfortunately you need two key fobs to program the third fob - you'll need to go to the dealership.

Good lesson for all of us MTCers - order an extra fob and program it pre-emptively!

I lost one of my keys. The local locksmiths do not have the software to program the keys, I had to order one through the dealer, and have them reprogram both keys.

Cost $350 +

P.S. I decided to purchase an PremiumCARE ESP warranty. Available as an option is key services, be it broken or misplaced. I bought the coverage for an additional $100.00

Is not the paper tag with the bar code attached to one of the original key fobs needed to reorder a key fob???

6 months ago I made a spare flip key that's identical to my OEM ones. It took some effort but I succeeded. I bought P/N 164-R8269 (aka Strat Tec #5939651) for about $80 from North Coast Keyless. They sell this key but do not update their online catalog very well so you may have to contact them directly. I then paid a local locksmith to cut the pattern for another $35. Not all such people have the machine with updated software to duplicate these "center mill" keys, so it may take a couple tries to find one. After that, I was able to program it to the truck myself. HOWEVER, this DIY procedure requires two working keys as well as the new one, so you may have to pay that locksmith to plug into the OBD port to enable this key. Be aware that a similar key is 164-R8130 but this is a "side mill" key and therefore not quite the correct part because the shape of the tip is different and could possibly jam in the lock. Do not try cheap Chinese clones, as they are generally unreliable and you really need your key to work all the time, every time.

Just to expand on this subject, the actual remote will depend on your features = remote start, proximity key unlock/lock , push button start etc. etc. Be sure to identify which fob works with your features before you purchase.

I'm reading that I can program a key if I buy an OBD II adapter and download a free trial of Forscan? Is this correct?

I just bought my Maverick used and only had 1 key, I bought the PremiumCARE ESP with that key service option. Are you saying it still cost you $350 to replace the key or are you saying that if you had not had the coverage you would have had to pay $350+ ?
