Recommitment to My Maverick

Last week I started looking with interest at Tacoma's since I can afford to trade my '24 Maverick Lariat for one (reminiscent of Jimmy Carter confessing he had "lusted after other women" when running for president in the mid 70's). Anyway, after admiring all it had to offer, I thought about the reasons for trading in my beloved 2018 F-150 Lariat for the Mav... my sciatica told me it's time to get a small truck with a lower bed and cab. I found the Maverick met both of those needs... I can slide right into the butt-level seat without stepping up, and I can easily load things into the crotch-level bed. Not so with the Tacoma I was "lusting after." I now consider the seat and bed height to be among my MIR's (most important requirements) when shopping for a truck.

I've been sniffing around at a mid size truck recently as well. But they're just so expensive, and the idea of starting over on a new auto loan when the Maverick is nearly paid off just doesn't make sense. Luckily there's no 0% financing to sway me.

The Mav seems to be canibalizing the body on frame light truck market. Look at the sales numbers for the Ranger versus the Mav. Both are overpriced for what they are but that is the market. Anyone looking for a Ranger is more likely to compromise into a Mav or splurge into an F150 purely because the Ranger just doesn't make a ton of financial sense at this point.

KEMEYER - for exactly the reasons you listed, I sold my mid-sized 2016 GMC Canyon V6 in 2022 to get a 22 Mav EB and placed an order for a Mav hybrid. The Mav is easier to enter, has a nicer ride the bed is fine for what I need and so on.

I had two vehicles for myself, a sedan for everyday errands and the GMC for work related needs. With the Mav I was able to sell the sedan as the Mav is enjoyable to drive as an everyday vehicle.

I hear ya on the sciatica, I can most definitely relate. I have severe arthritis in my entire spine along with severe disc space narrowing and disc bulges. Like you, I went to the maverick for the ease of in and out of the vehicle and bed height. You may not be interested but I hear rumors of the 2026 Honda Ridgeline is going to be redesigned to be more of a truck look, nothing official from Honda, but there's videos and talk online youtube etc but could be "fake". Anyways, I will be considering the 2026 Honda IF it's true about the redesign ends up being true, will wait and see. IMO, the Hondas interior is light years ahead of the maverick - that's my main draw along with its entry/exit and bed height is similar to the maverick. Supposedly it will be offered in hybrid and ice power trains.

My wife wanted to keep her mother's jeep when she stopped driving. Aside from being too expensive for us to just add as a car at the time, "You got in and out three times the same day--and were in pain for three days!"

But she still occasionally grumbles about it.

So when getting her the maverick, I insisted that she and her back try sitting in a Ranger as well. At that point, a mere couple of years later, the price difference was no longer relevant to our finances.

She insisted on the Maverick as easier to get into!

Torque and horsepower is there but at a higher rpm to get it. Not enough ground clearance the AWD is 7.9 inches. I even got the optional p235 AT tires to boost the clearance on the Maverick for occasional off road but mostly deep snow and a more aggressive tread design.

Funny you posted how easy the Maverick is for its low height and already having back issues. Keep in mind the Honda Ridgeline bed is raised to accommodate a trunk. Also that trunk prohibits a conventional spare. Good luck getting at your spare if you have the bed loaded.

Also that design for a trunk is a ergonomic nightmare. Doctors always and I mean literally always lift with your legs. Not so with that design and keep in mind you are bending over the bumper as well.

Lastly I think that swing tailgate is an accident waiting to happen if you have it swung open in a parking lot. That is an easy fix, make it a split swing tailgate.

I also heard its shorter or not as deep the bed and won't accommodate 5 gallon gas cans if you have a tonneau cover. Not sure on this one, hearsay but I'm always filling diesel fuel for my tractors and gas for the side x side and snowmobile sometimes for the generator or semi trash pump.

As far as I know at present you cannot get a 7 plug trailer wire harness or a brake controller from the factory at present they also don't offer back up assist or trailer hitch assist.

Just a few of my observations.

I understand but they have a lot to change to make it desirable for myself. Living in the country mpg is needed just getting to town. Another I mentioned living in the sticks it's can be 3 to 5 days after a significant snow before they plow my roads. I have a mile and a half or 3 miles to get to pavement or a maintained road. Thus the need for ground clearance. I wanted the tremor with lockers and extra ground clearance the 2000lb towing limit and at the time 5 mpg difference on highway both didn't work for myself.

Another factor is I have 3 Ford dealerships about a half hour away. Not so with Honda nearest one is about 2 hours one way. So having access to one close by or even needing one on a trip is another reason to buy Ford or another manufacturer besides Honda. I think if sales keep climbing or steady on the Maverick it would seem other manufacturers would want a piece of the pie. I hope so because competition is usually good for the consumer both in price and quality.

I seriously appreciate your input and thank you. Like I said I'll make a thorough and fair comparison IF the Ridgeline is actually redesigned in MY26 as rumored. Especially the ease of enter/exiting the vehicle and interior quality/luxury/features. I'm in no hurry, if it fits my needs I’ll buy it, if it doesn’t I won’t. I don't have the living & road conditions that you have to consider, I do respect that. I'm not really concerned too much about gas mileage unless it's just really stupid bad and there's almost handful each of most every major brand you can think of in my area (ford, chevy, gmc, honda, toyota, nissan, subaru, dodge/jeep/ram-whatever they call themselves these days. I have a 4x4 f150 which sits parked most of the time and the wife has an expedition if we need anything the maverick is not suited for, there just harder on me getting in/out of easily.

Make no mistake, I like my maverick, it fits most of my needs, especially health wise getting in/out and its been rock solid, zero issues, not even a squeak/rattle. I could drive it until I go 10 toes up and be happy with it. But I do much prefer the ridgelines interior, imo light years ahead of the lariat maverick but I like the exterior of the maverick better than the existing ridgeline-which the rumored redesign for MY26 supposedly has it looking more truck like-which might not even come to pass.
