Well the TCU can turn itself on and send out a 911 call with your GPS coordinates when you get into accident. So yeah I think it is an advertised feature just not application.

The TCU activation conditions, who knows. But you specifically referred to extra hardware, a separate power source to guard against the power being cut. That is something that can be checked with a teardown.

Doesn't the XLT and Lariat (or is that just the Lariat Luxury package, maybe?) include that sensor as part of the trim upgrade? I know that the XL can add it as a dealer option.

No. The XLT and Lariat include the "Basic" Perimeter Alarm. That means the alarm goes off if the Doors, hood, or tailgate are opened. No trim includes the Perimeter Plus .
If they load it up on a trailer like somebody else mentioned, it's not going to go off unless it senses a shock or motion.
