Has anyone recently taken possession of a new Maverick with rear mud flaps installed as shown in the attached picture. Several vehicles on the dealership lot have them similarly positioned. The dealership says they are supposed to protect the rocker panel - that seems to be accurate for the front flap. How about the rear? As mounted, it sure doesn't seem to be protecting anything while going forward.

And should I have had front flaps installed as part of the package?

I don't think they are mudflaps. I believe they are strategicslly positioned to help aerodynamics. I could be way off but they are not mudflaps. Many mudflaps that you can purchase after delivery use the existing holes on the inner wheel well. Just remove the few push pins and the holes on the mudflaps line up and either reuse the push pins you removed or use the ones provided with the mudflaps.

The flaps in front of the tires are called splats. They're for aero. Put some mudflaps on and you'll be happy.

I think its actually "spats"? And yes, they are there for aerodynamics.

Anyhow, I like my @MABETT mud flaps, they work very well to keep the rocks/dust/dirt/local horse poo off the truck. There are plenty to choose from, some more for looks than function, but I think most agree to look for flaps that don't rub on the paint.

Thank you all for the clarification. CClark, I've noted @MABETT on other threads addressing third party real mud flaps. I'll install for certain. Splats offered a good mental image - but the spats image suits me better!
As for my designating what I have as mud flaps - I though they were poor substitutes for the real deal. Still, the dealer made no effort to correct my designation.

Never assume the sales person is a "car person". They may in fact be a complete idiot when it comes to motor vehicles.
