The serrated blade designed directs the directed stream to push the tire towards the rear bumper mainly to keep the tire out of the rear seat area. With the bed already traveling up in this case the additional air pressure would although relatively small would add to the rising of the bed. This wreck is a vote to be sure the spare is fully inflated at all times and is a biggie reason those removing the serrations to get a larger tire under their truck need to NOT bend or cut the rupture teeth away.
Do we actually know anything about this Maverick truck? Were the serrations in place or were they taken out?

Well, I decided to take a look at that design feature.
Because of the angle of the 'teeth' it looks to me like it's more designed to keep the tire in place vertically and horizontally by preventing it from angling up or down. I'm suggesting this because if they wanted the tire to rupture, then they'd have done better to place one sharp cutting blade pointed at the tire instead of the design in this image. So, the spare (If inflated) provides a bit of protection / buffer if the vehicle is hit from behind but the main purpose would probably not be intended to puncture the tire. Just my opinion.

Ford Maverick Rear ended Maverick hit so badly it flips. 100_1281_S.JPG

"twas just a flesh wound."
My concern would be "spine" related injuries... :(

In all seriousness, I would not have wanted anybody to go through that experience.

This is just a repost from reddit but this is interesting to see how it held up from that bad of a hit.

When I am the last car in a line of stopped cars, be it on the highway, freeway stop and go or an offramp, I always activate my flashers and watch my rear view mirror until I see the approaching vehicle is slowing down. There are so many distracted drivers. I also leave a large interval between myself and the vehicle in front of me.

Sure, some people cut in but I'd rather be safe and have space to cut to the shoulder or center divider if the approaching vehicle doesn't stop.

Requiring all vehicles to have PCA (Pre-Collision Assist) will help avoid accidents like this. Or using radar / ACC.
Reverse cameras were a luxury car item, then became mostly standard, then became required by DOT.

We'll get there, but old cars and dumb drivers will still be around.

Who said the brake lights weren't working? Guy that caused the accident wasn't watching the road!
I cannot stand it when people call Crashes an Accident. Stop it !
It was a Crash due to human error.
I've never seen an Accident.
"They had an Accident" NO they did not !
One was negligent !
"Stupid is as stupid does," a famous line from the movie Forrest Gump, means that a person's actions, not their appearance or perceived intelligence, reveal their true nature, especially their lack of intelligence or common sense.

They are not accidents, that is Lawyer speak, Pisses me off.

Prefer to have drivers capable of operating safely. All the safety equipment available can be undone by a distracted or drunk driver.
